My bass playing friend has a teacher who is teaching him to finger all of his scales all funky. For example, if he was playing a Bb maj scale starting at the 6th fret on the E string, he would finger

---------------------------------------
-------------------------------7---8---
-----------------6---8---10------------
---6---8---10-------------------------

I've tried to tell him that that is just not the best way to finger it, but he thinks that I'm crazy, so tell me who's right.

His teacher plays guitar, so maybe this is feasible on guitar, but not on bass?

what is so weird about that?
granted he could move that 10 up a string where it would be a 5, but thats personal preference i guess...

That definatley looks like a guitar scale(That stretch is much easeir on guitar than on bass). While its good to KNOW that fingering, I agree that its definatley not the most effective on bass.

Sounds like that teacher is teaching him how to play guitar on a bass, from my limited experience.

IMO, it seems odd and it would be awkward to play it that way on a bass. It would probably be much less awkward on a guitar though.

Maybe someone else knows why you would want to play a major scale that way?

That's what I figured.
