There is one white bass maker I met at the NAMM show last summer. Mike Adler. He started out with the old I LOVE BLACKS. I KNOW ALL ABOUT THEM BECAUSE I HANG OUT WITH THEM. Then he says I wish only black guys would play my basses. Then out of the blue he precedes to tells me this old Not here. -Mod joke using the word way to many times and in a very disrespectful matter. What made him think that he had that right? After that he gives me a bull**** sale pitch, trying to sell me a bass that I didnt instead of making the custom one I asked for.
Dang... I'm not black

I'd like some confirmation about the veracity of the blog. They are hardly known for accuracy and unbiased comment.

Maybe so, but in context it would seem silly to just randomly throw that in.

Yeal, and apparently Zolla and Warmouth[sic] are racists, too.

Don't believe everything you read.

There's not really much room for "interpretation" over if it was racist or not. If they use that word, even in a casual setting it's wrong, and it's all the more bad in a buisness setting of all places.

Unless he was lying about adlers word usage then I would not have anything to do with adler guitars.

If strength of character is an issue for you bass buyers out there, then I will personally vouch for Mike Adler's character. I knew him for five months back in my Phoenix days and I have nothing but good things to say about him.

Whether or not you like or dislike his basses, I'm not sure that using this hearsay is fair. It's unverifiable and comes second (or even third) hand.

I am not, repeat, NOT affiliated with Adler basses in any way. I live in Toronto, Canada and, if I'm not mistaken, Mike Adler lives somewhere in Southern California. I have seen close up one of his first attempts to make a ten string bass and was struck with the care and the detail he put into it. (I did wonder how one would play something like that, but thats another story)

This is not meant as an attack on anyone. Numerous times in my life I, too, have heard things indirectly and have used this info to make judgements on people. I don't feel that those were my best character moments.

i have a feeling this is bogus...if adler hates blacks so much, then why do so many black bass players play adler basses?
even Jauqo has several Adler basses, and is a proud owner...i highly doubt smith knows what he is talking about...

I wonder the odds of smith trying to deal a nice discount because of his "professional" status and then adler turned him down, he decided to try to ruin the adler business...

I think you miss read the quote. Adler supposidly said that he only wants black people to play his basses. Basically reverse racism.

I'm sure that's why he worked so closely with Gary Goodman.

I still think this is the dumbest thread I've seen in a while. It's nothing but base slander and hearsay.

Who is this guy with the blog, and why are you taking his word for gospel? Is it not possible he has his own agenda?

Yeah well "in context", it makes sense for that dumb ass to try and slander Mike Adler after he didn't get the free bass from Mike that he was trying to get. He almost tells on himself when saying "After that he gives me a bull**** sale pitch, trying to sell me a bass that I didnt (want) instead of making the custom one I asked for." Custom one that he "asked for". Not "ordered", "asked for". Yeah, everyone knows that Mike Adler doesn't do custom order basses... Gary Goodman bought that 12 string Adler at Guitar Center, didn't he? Haha.

How pathetic (and stupid, from a legal standpoint) of him to try and slander Mike Adler. Do you really think that someone like Chuck Rainey (who owns 3), Jauqo III X (who owns 5) or Theron Brison (who owns 3) would own Adler basses if he walked around telling "****** jokes"?

Anyone that believes that probably also believes everything they read on the cover of all the magazines in the check out line at the grocery store.

I used to read a lot of posting from mike adler a couple of years ago and that statement does not match his profile a bit, I'm sure that if he said something similar to that it had to be on a joking tone.

I'm sure that Jauqo or Garry Goodman may chime in as they spot this thread and comment on this quote

Sorry, but this thread is sad. Are we to avoid this luthier based solely on the comments of a blogger? Who is Kenn Smith? Why should I believe him?

i think in the context given, kenn was saying that adler was being sarcastic at the point that you made in bold text because if you read the rest of the blog, he talks about him not liking black people...
and the story that badcomrade told is the one that i have heard about Kenn and adler's meeting at namm

Thumbs up This is KENN SMITH

All what I said is based on fact. What happened and was said to my face. What has happened to me has happen to players of all cultures. THIS IS NOT JUST A BLACK ISSUE. Lot of good players don't get the service or the respect they deserve. It's funny how all you put this in a racists forum, it was more about bad business. Makes you wonder. Did you read the rest. Hmmmm, like I said…. It makes you wonder. I printed that blog so others can be aware.

And for the record, I was not looking for a FREE BASS. I was looking for a respectable luthier. One who doesn’t think he’s a GOD. I don’t need any free basses. Hell, I just turn down 2 companies. I only endorse what I believe in. I could care less about a FREE BASS.

I made a agreement with Alder for a percent off with a commission deal to help him sell. Don’t believe me ASK HIM!!!

No one wants to speak up when something of this nature comes up. Just want to sit back and let others take the heat. Cool, I’ll be the one. When someone treats me, love ones, my friends or associates with disrespect I will stand up for what is right. If I stand alone THAN SO BE IT!! If I’m wrong or right I will stand up and take it either way!!

What Adler said was disrespectful. People who I have know for years never disrespected me in that matter. Like I said, he doesn’t know me that well. Why tell that joke? Watch what comes out of your mouth!!

I hate jokes of that nature. In any culture. It’s bad taste.

A friend once told me a story about how he’s father lost an account in Kentucky when he made fun of GRITS!! The key word is RESPECT!!!

KNOW THIS, I WILL STAND UP FOR WHAT OR WHO I BELIEVE IN.

Remember the GEICO commercial about the cavemen……..
