My friend is going to sell me a bass clarinet for $5! ... or should I say :clarineter:

Sounds like fun.
Advice? I'm not going to get a teacher because
A) I'm not making it my focus
B) I'm lazy.

Recordings? Artists? Books?

Clarinets always sound like squealing pigs to me . . .

Bass clarinet: just a bigger pig?

Wow, thats a good deal. Bass clarinets actually sound pretty good, not much like a regular clarinet. In addition to bass guitar, I also play tuba, and I can actually apply what I learn on one insterment, onto the other.

Matt, you've got a great deal there! I'd love to pick up the bass clarinet one day (finances permitting).

I don't know of any musicians who exclusively play bass clarinet - most are sax players who can also play various other instruments.
Some players to investigate:
John Surman
Eric Dolphy
David Murray
Bennie Maupin
Tim Garland

www.bassclarinet.org might provide a good starting point.

Please keep us updated with how you get on with the instrument.

If you think bass clarinets sound lame, listen to some Omar stuff. He's got a couple of songs where the bass clarinet IS the bassline. Some of the coolest songs you'll ever hear. BTW, I'll give you $20 fer it!

tenor sax, hard? give me a break! i hope you make lots of fun of him...

if you want hard, tell him to take up trumpet, tuba, french horn...i mean, come on, they only have 3 valves, whereas my tenor sax had about 20...i give credit to the brass players

Piano is hella hard.
My dad plays pretty well but I'm hopeless. I can't seem to understand pressing more than one key at the same time.

oh i do, don't worry

he's already composed this ska line thing, where in the middle there's one really high squeaky note. when questioned on why he played the god awful note, he replied "i need to use my octave pad"
