Well this just FANTASTIC! [d'oh moment rant]

Ugh. Okay, so I wrote and recorded a whole album....and now I have to re-record it in a new tuning.

I wrote all the songs in Guitar Pro. 9 of them in drop-d and 2 in drop-d#. I recorded them all while writing and tabbing out the vocal parts in Guitar Pro. So now it's time to track the vocal parts and what happens? I can't even sing my own songs? GAH!

Most of the vocal parts in my songs are just out of my vocal range. Just one or two steps too high, but enough to where I cannot sing the majority of them. I tried transposing the parts an octave down, but that really wasn't cutting it. Today I transpose the Guitar Pro tabs down a whole step and whaddya know? I can sing along perfectly with all the vocal parts I had written.

Now I have to go back and re-record the album in drop-C tuning. I don't really like tuning that low, but if I'm going to sing my own songs then I don't have much of a choice. FANTASTIC!

/rant

Anyone out there ever have a d'oh moment like this? Luckily it only took me about a week to record everything.

Wait, why would you record songs you've never actually played? Cuz if you played them once, wouldn't you realize that you can't sing it right?

Well I don't have a band right now, so they were all written basically on Guitar Pro. I'd get the idea for the song, tab it out, go back and learn the parts I had just written and when that was done I'd record it. I wrote the vocal melodies the same way, and I never bothered to actually sing the vocal parts until after the music was recorded.

Maybe it's just my songwriting "method", but that sounds CRAAAAZY to me.

But hey, whatever works, right?

Hope the new ones go smoother.

You can't just run it through software and drop it?

Hire a singer and start a band.

Ive tried to drop my songs down a pitch or two and it usually messes something up and doesnt sound right. Im only using Garageband but still. Look on the bright side, you will be able to perform these songs in your sleep now.

Yeah it's a different way of going about things, haha.

The songs were written with a singer in mind, but our band broke up and I had to write the parts myself. I'll def. pay more attention to what I'm writing for now on.

And yeah, I tried to drop the pitch already and it just ain't gonna work. It's okay though. It was my first time ever recording anything last time I did it. I've learned a bunch more since then, so it should come out better than before.

Trust me, I've been trying to put a band together for ages, haha. And I'd just rather sing it myself, even if I have to re-do everything. Finding a good singer is hard enough. Finding one who cares about music and shows up on time is damn near impossible.

Ha Ha

I'm really sorry this happened to you, but face it, it's pretty damned funny. I can't believe you admitted it.

Yeah, I admite, it is pretty funny, haha. I was mad at first but now I'm looking at it as a way to improve the recording quality.

....and my songwriting habits!
