It was awesome.
Paul Gilbert, John Petrucci, and Joe Satriani played, and they were all amazing.
Paul had his band behind him, didn't quite catch the names, but they were all amazingly talented. His other guitarist was amazing, kept up with Paul and they were harmonizing away beautifully. The bassist was great, and even took two solos during "Scarified" and "Addicted to the Rush" Paul played amazingly, that's to be expected.
Then came up John Petrucci, who played with Dave LaRue and "Iron Mike" Portnoy. He started the set off heavy, with "Jaws of Life." He played the stuff off his solo album, basically. He played one really beautiful song w/ lots of delay and stuff, and before that the intro was him + LaRue playing some song from Star Wars, I believe. It was damn cool. "Glasgow Kiss" and "Damage Control" were played, and I gotta say John is just impressive. He was damn emotional that night, anybody who calls his guitar playing emotionless owes it to themselves to at least see him here. He was great.
Then came up Joe Satriani. With him was Matt Campiteli (I think that's it), Dave LaRue (What a workin' bassist!) and a rhythm guitarist who's name I don't know. To be honest, based on the G3 DVD's I've seen, it seemed he does a LOT of long, boring, whammy bar abuse/sound manipulation stuff. I wasn't looking forward to it, even though I like his albums. Boy was I wrong! Joe played all my favorite songs, a LOT of Surfing with the Alien stuff, and some new stuff it seemed. Notable songs include a heavy guitar/bass jam for "Cool #9," a great crowd song "Crowd Chant" I believe it was (He plays a guitar lick and the crowd had to emulate it with their voices, great fun), and "Always With Me, Always With You"
The amazing part was, at the end of "Always with Me, Always with You" instead of ending, Joe and the band continued playing, working off an extended jam for the song. Joe took another solo for about a minute or so, and after that he knelt before the monitors, and out of the right side of the stage just popped John Petrucci, who played a solo. After his solo, out came Paul Gilbert, who did his own solo for the song. Then they went into a bit of a Jam/Wankfest (Which was really amazing, everyone was doing really fun things, Petrucci was playing around and doing that crazy Two Hand behind the neck things that people like Michael Angelo Batio are known for). Then the jam went into "Foxy Lady" "Purple Haze" and some of "Voodoo Chile" which Paul sang for (It was a medleyish affair). Then they played "Jumpin' Jack Flash" which was really great, and ended with "Goin' Down"
Great show, I suggest it heartily! Not just wanking, but damn good music.
PICS!

More to come!

Thanks for the report and pics! | There we go! Guess I mixed him up with Matt Bissonnette, who wasn't there. LaRue killed during both Satch's & Petrucci's set, but I think it was in Petrucci's where he shined. |

I remember years ago when they added Steve Morse and Petrucci for some dates (besides Vai and Satriani) plus Sheehan and Stu. That was probably awesome.

Graeme | Vai's soloing is awesome, but his rhythm playing is dreadful. They should add him for the next G4 tour. Petrucci's been working out!
Curious, what don't you like about Petrucci?

It can be really hard to reinvent yourself over time. Then you have the die hards who don't like the change. You just can't please everyone! |

You just can't please everyone! | Yeah, i cant explain the whole thing with me, i prefer a band that just grove's well and has a good over all sound now, instead of Face melting solo's and such, The only type of music i can stand shreading in now is the really heavy stuff, not like DT or any of that, but more Death Metal, Trash stuff.
Im getting more into the stuff like Amon Amarth, The Sword, Dimmu Borgir, The Faceless, Chimera and Gojira. The harder the better.

The keyboardist would have been Emi, Paul's wife.
From Paul's website: Quote:
My band is:
Me: Lead Guitar, Lead Vocals
Bruce Bouillet: Lead Guitar
Mike Szuter: Lead Bass, Lead Vocals
Jeff Bowders: Lead Drums
Emi Gilbert: Lead Keyboards

His soloing on Scarified and Addicted to the Rush were killer. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
