OK, my wife's cousin was in town for a conference, so we went out to El Cajon and took a tour of the Taylor Guitars factory today. It turns out that cousin owns over 20 Taylor guitars, most of them collector's versions with custom inlays and exotic woods. All's I can say is, if you're ever in the San Diego area, bop on out to El Cajon at 1:00 p.m. any weekday and take the tour. Bring your camera. It's an unbelievable factory. They produce almost 300 guitars a day.
For all you hand-built freaks, forget it. The QC and build quality of these guitars surpasses by far what can be done by hand. All the cutting, forming, finishing, and buffing is done by robots, with hands-on QC all the way through the process. The final assembly, including installation of binding, is by hand. The body tops are cut by lasers. All wood is precision milled and sanded to a tolerance of 1/1000 of an inch.
Their stock of wood is just unbelieveable. I saw over 150 T-5 body blanks in racks waiting for final routing and tops. I saw cocobolo, macassar ebony, koa, mahogany, maple, everything, and tons of it.
OK, the news. I asked when we can expect to see the bass that the T-5 was supposed to be on the market, and the tour guide said it looks like next year. He also told me some more stuff that I can't divulge.
If you want to take the tour, I'll go with you. Just let me know. I grew up very near El Cajon.
