I dunno. Check some Primus performances. Les had a whammy bar on his CT. I think.

There are usually ways to get it to not dangle loosely. Most allow for tightening so it can be moved to a position and left there without it swinging back down when you let go.

Kahlers do not dangle but are threaded so you can lock it tight or pivot it back and it stays put.

I believe some guys wrap a bit of electrical tape around the end to keep it from floppin' 'round.

It depends on the model and what you want. Kahlers can be tightened down, but if you want it to dangle so it won't be in the way, just loosen it a couple of turns.

There are Floyd-like models with the handle jumping between fixed positions (at 9, 12, and 3 o'clock)

what's wrong with having a non-dangling but perfectly mobile vibrato arm? For example, I like to be able to swing it and leave it to hover over any string I please during one part of a song, then let it go and then come back to it later in the song and it's exactly where I left it. It's a normal thing to want a whammy bar to be able to do.
