Never mind that it's Victor layin' down the sick grooves. Watch it through until about 5:50 on and then have a peek at JD's kick drum.

Is that a snare fixed to the kick head?

If it is, what on earth for?

If not, what is it?

It's a Yamaha kick drum mic. It uses a big, wide diaphragm to grab really low frequencies. Lee Sklar uses one on his bass cabs, and you can see Questlove using one on his kick drum on the Jimmy Fallon show - there's a Philadelphia Flyers logo on it.

The yamaha Subkick is a great kick/basscab mic for really capturing the low thump. i have used a modified 12" stage monitor with about the same results. THe subkick is deigned with a lowpass filter in it that only picks up 60hz and lower.

The studio we did our last recording batch at had one. It was to capture the subs off the kick. Had another mic to capture the snap and fundamental.
