1. To create a rhythm foundation for a group of instrument players, together with the percussion instruments (eg. drums)
2. Fill the void between low sounding (eg kick drum) and high sounding (eg guitar) instruments
3. To give the music something for the listeners to feel, not only hear
4. Set a mood for the song
5. To substitute the hard-to-transport, volume challenged double bass with an electric, fretted (or frettless for some), shorter scale counterpart
6. To give a point of discussion on TB other than double bass
7. To look good and atract people of the opposite gender with a sexy, vibrating, 4 string (or 5 or 6 or more) version of a guitar
8. For the bass. For the balls
