What bass for Metal...

Sign in to disble this ad
I love these forums, very informative and entertaining. BUT holy crap don't people know how to think for themselves anymore.

What is the best bass for Metal? Answer...whatever you like

What is the best strings for thrash? Answer...whatever you like

Should I buy a 5 string? Answer Do you want one or not (Go with your feelings not what a bunch o strangers say)

Where should I set the treble on my amp to sound like Geddy? Answer... How the hell do I know unless I have all the same equipment as you!!! DUH!!

Have you ever heard of Trial and Error. Try things and if they work fine, if not try something different. The Learning by your mistakes thing is your best teacher.

Am I saying to buy that Fender Jazz of e bay sight unseen...NO... But go to a music store and try one or two to get a feel for it, if you like then take a chance. However I have only bought 2 guitars online one I still have, the other got sold in 6 months. PLAY BEFORE U BUY is a good lesson for noobs and seasoned players!!

Please people learn how to think for yourselves. Go to a fricken music store and try a dozen basses, what you like is what you buy. Why do I have to tell you what to buy!!

I might love a P bass for laying down vintage metal, but am I right NO!! It's my preference only. Go out and make your own decisions you will be the better for it.

Sorry I am not trying to tick anyone off, I just thought it is about time someone said it.

Now I will go hide and lets the flames begin

You won't get any argument from me - life would be pretty dull if nobody endured even a minor cock-up! I've been a life-long advocate of trial and error - if it hurts nobody else but myself, I'll give it a try.

When I started playing bass in 1989, I had no internet and didn't know any other bass players, so the only way I could learn/progress was by just trying things. I still laugh when I think of the first routing I made for a J-pickup on my old cheap Marlin P-bass! I had to make a second scratchplate to cover the route, as you could have fitted a mudbucker in there! ;-) Same for colours - I stripped/repainted the thing several times.

Likewise for buying basses - I'd head off down to the music shop every Saturday to try what they had (and not being able to afford any of 'em of course!). Not a condemnation of others, but I've noticed some folks just seem afraid to venture into the unknown or even make a basic decision themselves.

I also miss the days of heading around town on the buss doing the same thing cause I was too young to drive. Every Sat I would make the same trip. If there are any old school Newfies here they will remember. 1> Collis Music(The Guitar Shop) 2. Echo Music (Long's Hill) 3. Down to Huttons Music and O'Brians and if there was time I would go cross town to Davis Music. I believe O'Brians is the only one left now, the rest are chains like L and M. My god I never thought I could remember this lol.

This gave me an education of what different guitars and amps etc... are like. I have never owned a Ric, but I remember playing them. That's how I know that I eventually want one. These days kids only say gee that looks cool, go and waste their money and get p. o. ed when it is not what they wanted. So they come here and ask stupid questions like What's the best bass for Metal, cause they are too lazy to go and find out for themselves. Once again the answer is...What ever you feel comfortable with!!

first of all, this is not about basses, so it doesn't belong in the basses forum.

secondly ....

There is no bass "best" for metal, take this for example. Back when metal first came out, there were no basses or even guitars that were designed for that but they still grabbed the tone for it.

There's basses that give a metal look. All the tone comes from the amp/pickups. So ideally, get any bass you want and as long as you have a nice amp that you can grab your metal tone out of you'll be fine. I just bought myself a Vintage Model Jazz Fretless and it sounds great with metal with my amp setup. I might change the pickups to get a better tone but it's still great.

As far as I know (I am no historian) he was one of the few who did use it, he was the true original metal god IMO!!!!

The only thing more obnoxious and less original than the things mentioned in the OP, are all the comments similar to the OP that constantly pop up. I would say people make fun of those topics more than those topics are discussed by an extremely large margin. In fact, the OP is so unoriginal and regurgitated, I actually feel pretty unoriginal calling out the OP for being unoriginal and not thinking for himself because people call people out for the subject matter that's being discussed in the OP so often.

does that make me hip or what?
