Question What bass topics are you tired of hearing about?

Sign in to disble this ad
I will admit, that I have rehashed some old tired topics in the past from lack of thourough research before starting a new thread. But what are the most irritating threads that never seem to go away? Granted, we are all here to help each other but some of us seem to lose patience with repetitious threads.
What ranks highest on your list?

"Who has the best tone?" That topic, I swear to God, is so annoying. I just plug in and play. I really don't get these "tone"-freaks, who thinks that tone is more important than technique.

  • "What pickups are best for <insert genre>?" - Anything can be made to work anywhere if you're willing to take time. Deal with it.
  • What tone caps are best for <insert bass>?" - Depends on the tone you're looking for, there's no universal guideline.
  • Why get a five-or-six string bass when <insert god of Fretless bass> needed only four? - Whoever needs an ERB will get an ERB, whoever wants to try one out, should. Whoever uses one already knows why they need it.

And so forth.

"I want to buy either a <brand/model> or a <brand/model>. Which should I get?"

This drives me absolutely nuts. Buy the bass/amp/whatever that sounds and feels best to you.

Why does my tone sound like crap in the house when I insult the sound guy?

Any thread in which the OP asks for detailed recommendations for new gear - along with solid reasons for those specific recommendations - yet doesn't think to include any useful information regarding musical genres, style, playing technique, volume requirements, sound reinforcement environment, etc...thereby compelling anyone good enough to respond into a game of "20 Questions".

At least 90% of such dopey threads could be eliminated overnight if people would simply think about what they're asking - before they post. If they post...

I don't get tired of topics. I just simply ignore the ones I don't want to read about.

By the way, what are the best strings for metal?

What bass/amp/cab do you think will sound best for my style of music?

Subjective stuff like that can only be answered by the person asking the question.

"my tone"
"Best"
"Geddy, Marcus & Les"
"XYZ Brand is best" (without exact details of year and model)

Basically any detail that doesn't improve the overall playing field for us who play for paying customers.

You left out budget. I've seen these "20 questions" threads go to 2 pages of puffery before someone thinks to ask, "Um, how much do you have to spend?"

And as much as I hate to say it, the "Chicks at Shows" threads are running out of steam in a big way.

"Bass getting killed by UPS, or FED EX shipping" threads. Reading them makes me cringe, like watching someone get their fingers mangled.

There is a lot of nonsense and redundancy on any internet forum. Seems to me that the ratio of a**holes on this forum is pretty low compared to others.

Topics get old when rehashed over and over but a lot of useful information and gear get exchanged here. Noobs don't always know how to search topics before posting and the search engine is not always that helpful anyway. So , I give a pass to the topics that are beaten to death. I just don't usually read them.

Equipment/Genre questions, soundman wanted me to use a di, what effect(s) will get this sound/what's-his-face-from-muse. Wouldn't mind that last one so much if there weren't a sticky about it.

While I wouldn't wish a shipping mishap on anyone, I like those threads, especially when they have pics. I guess it's b/c I used to do shipping and receiving at a music store.

LMAO, that is just so wrong. Definitely one of the great mysteries of the universe.
