What is the best way to ship a neck?

Is there a special box or tube for shipping bass necks? Will the triangle tube used for shipping drawings work?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

As long as it's not a neck with the dreaded "Breakaway" Headstock, You'll be fine in just about any Box. I usually make a Triangle box out of Flat Cardboard. Then I wrap the neck in about 4 layers of Bubble wrap.

Back the truss nut off. I've recently bought 2 necks off ebay and both necks had the truss tightened as if under pressure. Fortunately, they were OK.

This!

Also make sure that it cannot move inside the package once it's packaged.

One thing I've learned from my 25 years in the packaging industry is that packaging is cheap. You are way better off going overboard with the packaging materials on the front end than trying to sue the shipper for damages on the back end.

Where is a good and cheap (preferably free) source to find mailing tubes that will fit a bass neck?

thick cardboard tubes work well, with neck wrapped in rags or taped brown paper and popcorn filling in the rest of it. Soft of like this

I prefer a nice square-sided affair- less likely to roll off a pile, readily available; ask at any small store that sells something similar in size. A bike shop will often have many to choose from- a fork box would be ideal. My local shop has a ton of boxes and packing material that they need to dispose of regularly- they are always willing to save a few before flattening, I just need to go in a day ahead or early in the AM and ask. Surgically-altered bike boxes make fine shipping for basses.

I would think the free triangle shaped Fedex map boxes are perfect.
