What constitutes being "washed up"

Sign in to disble this ad
This is something that I've been pondering as of late. What makes somebody "washed up". Is it trying to live off of past glory? Is it age? I don't think so, because BB King is ederly, and I think that he's better than ever. There are musicians - either national or local - whom I consider "washed up," yet I really don't know why I consider them so.

What do you think?

I think its when you stoop to having a TV show to pick your new lead singer...when you were popular 10+ years ago.

an artist is washed up when their music ceases to be relevent. this is of course very subjective as some like artists others would consider washed up. i think this is mental with musicians or any artist for that matter. if an artist soldiers on just to pay the bills, this may come through in the music, but not always. some artists quit because they are tired of the business. and sometimes washed up just means tired. some are gifted and can write brilliant songs at the drop of a hat, but are not the best at running a business. decisions should be made carefully for the betterment of a career. and you must want to play music for the love of music. you absolutely must have people in your corner. and you must be a team player. sometimes this is lost. i think to write relevent music, you must only write to please yourself and your heart and mind must be open. it takes a very strong person to maintain this in a business that basicly is not nice. this business can close hearts and minds quickly. and only the strong survive. imho. peace, jeff

Here are my criteria for "washed up:"

1. You appear on your own VH-1 special (these are a modern form of public eulogy)

2. You generate more attention through other things than music - like appearing on the The Surreal Life and act like a major douche-bag or having your mug shot posted on The Smoking Gun

3. You appear mostly at county fairs

4. You appear mostly at Indian casinos

5. The slow-speed chase

6. Whatever you put on eBay does not sell

7. You try your hand at politics

8. You end up as the answer to a Trivial Pursuit question

Washed up? I usually get washed up before I go to a gig. You know soap and water the whole bit. I had someone tell me the other night that I was washed up and I said thanks for noticing.
