So this weekend I walked into my local Guitar Center with the intention of checking out some of these higher end Squires I've been hearing about. I played a couple of different J's and they were good for the price but I didn't love any of them. Then I found a used Fender MIM Standard J going for $224. Played it and loved it and for that price decided I had to have it.
So I go home, dig way deep into the furthest reaches of my closet and pull out the Ovation acoustic/electric guitar that was my dad's before he discovered Taylors and that I haven't touched in several years. I've been hanging onto it for just the time I might want to trade it in for something else. The frets were all sorts of crusty, and the top strap peg was wobbly. I ran it over to a friend's house who has all the tools and know-how and cleaned it up, fixed the peg and crowned the frets.
Next I brought it back to Guitar Center and had the buyer check it out while I went to find my new Jbass. It wasn't where I had left it earlier, but I found it, and they let me trade the guitar for the bass, a case and a set of strings.
But here's the kicker. The bass had only come in the day before and they have to hold everything they get for a month in case it's reported stolen. So I have this bass that I can hardly wait to start playing and I've got to wait a whole month before I can have it. I'm still thrilled I was able to get it, but it's going to be really hard to wait for.

I didn't mean MY guitar that had my dad's original sales receipt from 1981 in the case!

I have a feeling that when this weekend rolls around, I'll be in that store asking if I can play it. And next weekend. And the following weekend.

damn that sounds familiar....
same thing with me when i got my Warwick...i was frustrated cos here was my dream bass but i couldn't play it yet...it shouldn't go out on the floor before the pawn hold is expired. its unfair.
stratovani: yep. that was me.
JBuckley: I like very nice :-) great color

While I'm none too crazy about having to wait, I'm definitely in the camp that's glad it was on the floor so I could find it. The hold might have even discouraged other people from buying it.

anyways, finding the vette was meant to be...so i played the game and waited. the wait is killer but it's worth it.

After repeatedly reminding my wife for days that I would be walking into Guitar Center to pick it up exactly when they opened at 11am, we got into a bit of a fight when first thing in the morning she asked what the possibility of me getting it later in the day would be. It was definitely worth the wait and the fight! After playing my 30" scale Musicmaster for 24 years, it's really nice to play full scale. Even unamplified I can really feel the difference. I still have to wait until Thursday to play it through my rig (which lives at my drummer's studio).
