I'm sure it's all happened to pick-players in the past. You run out of/don't have a pick....what piece of change do you use???
As I never play with picks...I always have pennies on hand.

FINGERNAIL!!! Do you use some top secret marykay stuff to beef up your nails? 1. mine would bend/break 2. I don't think I've ever had a nail long enough to pick a string with. |

I don't normally use a pick on bass, but if I absolutely had to I would probably find something other than a piece of metal...perhaps cut a piece of plastic or wood to shape.

Though it wouldn't matter if I had a pick or not. Either way is fine with me.

Use the plastic thing off of bread, hot dog buns.
Credit card, bank card, etc.
Once playing in a crust punk band I used a broken beer bottle shard and got cut up pretty bad.
I usually carry lots of picks with me, I keep about 3 bags at home and always keep 5 in my wallet, 3 in my pocket.

However, this has happened to me a couple times when I play a guitar gig. I'm much more likely to carry a pick than any kind of change, so when I find myself without either, I usually fold up a piece of paper or some kind of credit card type deal.
