What do you think this means?

I was told at a band audition that I play bass like a guitar player? For the life of me I can't figure out what that means.
So help me understand what that is supposed to mean. I don't use a pick, solo or play chords.

You fret the fretboard like chords? and you use a pick? and you go on endless wanking solos?

my guess is that you were probably playing more than just the root note of all the chords...that gets a lot of guitar players mad...

It all depends, if it's a guitar player who told you that, then I guess that means they think your play like a music god and kick ass!

Probably said by some idiot who claims the bass always has the same "role" no matter the style, song, genre, etc. and gets all wierded out buy more than four strings.

...then again, I am assuming and we all know what that can lead too....

Well, that last time I told that to someone playing bass he was not following the drums at all, and trying to solo/add a melody line in over everything even when there was singing. I have nothing against some tasty fills and lines in the right context but this guy was trying to wank.

He also happned to really be a guitar player that was filling in for us on bass. Funny thing was the first practice he played the bass like a bass and we liked it, the second and last practice with him he tried to go into lead bass land and acted like the prior practice never happened.

Even if you happen to be playing more that the root, other players still expect you to lay down a nice foundation so their guitars can shine.

Yeah... hahaha! You probably stole someone's thunder.. there MAY have been a bit of jealousy
in that comment you heard. Maybe they actually wanted a 'root-bound' bassist...

Did you play the same way you did at the infamous party? Maybe the guy who told you "the corect [sic] way to play bass" was right, huh?

Well, Lowner is a female, so while that might be hot, I doubt it happened.

Lol I had someone say to me once "I was watching you play bass, and I think you'd be good at saxophone".

He was actually serious. He thought I'd make a good saxophonist for some reason.
