What do you think of throw-back bands?

I.E. The (International) Noise Conspiracy, The Hives, Apples in Stereo, and a million other bands that basically pick a rather specific "historical" music sound and recreate it....?

Lately, I've been thinking of doing something somewhat similar with a "Velvet Goldmine" sound...

Pff, if you want to hear that kind of music done well, listen to the original. SOOOOOOO many bands a few years ago dedicated their lives to ripping off the Kinks and other invasion bands.

Some garage revival bands are good though.
Demon's Claws comes to mind.

Actually, one of the greatest bands of all time (IMHO), Jellyfish, was a bit of a "nostalgia band". Their two records, "Bellybutton" and "Spilt Milk" are pure genius, and stand up over a decade later as still musically revolutionary.

Nothings new anyways, every riff, chorus can be found earlier. It's all rehashed anyway.

Why not embrace it and do it well?

This has been my attitude of late, since I can seem to listen to any pop music today, and call out the references one-by-one.

I kinda have more respect for those who honestly tip their hats to what came before, than those who try to pretend they're doing something new.

The best bands at this sort of thing aren't the "throw-back" or "retro" bands; they are modern-day bands doing authentic material using the same equipment, production values, etc. There's a big difference between a revival band who is trying to do a "retro" thing, influenced by certain old bands...and a band that is actually authentically doing the same type of thing as those older bands.

I find it hard to generalize.

I mean, I like the bands mentioned in the OP to a certain extent (well, for Noise Conspiracy I like the Armed Love album at least) and I like some other somewhat retro acts like the White Stripes or the Killers.

But on the other hand, I'm not at all a fan of Jet or Wolfmother or the majority of Lenny Kravitz's stuff.

Everyone is a sum of their influences, but the way they combine them and infuse their own creativity is key. Bands that come off like rote imitations of their biggest idols just pale in comparison to the real thing.

Yeah, even though I don't like White Stripes or the Killers, those are actually good examples of bands that are really just "throwing back" to an earlier style/sound of music, but, at the same time, they are bringing something new and pushing the music in a new direction. Thanks TheBigO!
