what do YOU think of YOUR playing

Theres so much talk about famous bass players on here, but i'd like to here what not-so-famous people think of their own playing. Don't worry about being arrogant... how good do you think you are?

I'd like to think i'm at least decent as i've been playing for around 6 yrs, but i'd like to be a little more creative. I guess i need more experience in life.

The more I learn, the more I find out there is to learn.

Wow, we all seem to have a very Socratic way of thinking.

I definitly agree that learning more means there's more to learn.

I like to think that I'm a very creative player who isn't neccessarily "better" than anyone else, I just view things differently.

+1 on this as well.

I see so many players around me striving to be the fastest, best slapper, or whatever, and it seems pointless to me. I'm a Bass Player, my most important duty is to lay down a funky groove. Once the song is grooving, then I start to throw some fills sparingly.

Wasn't it a TBer that said that there is more music in what you don't play then what you do?

I think I am pretty good at what I do. What I do is a limited thing though- I am not good at being a chops master, nor a meat-and-potatoes guy, nor someone who can rip through the chord changes in "Giant Steps." I don't really practice any of those things though because I'm usually working on what I like to create, so I may have the potential to be good at those things, but I never take the opportunity to find out. So I'm pretty good at what I do

I'm happy with the way my technique is progressing, although I need to understand much more about music theory, and learn to tap my creative side better.

i definitely have more techniques to learn, cuz there's always more out there. but for the past 5 years or so i've been concentrating/reflecting on things like "pocket" and "groove" and Keeping It Simple. mix with a good dose of theory and serve. spice to taste (a little goes a LONG way).

ya.

I'm not the most talented or skilled bassist out there, but I'm alright. Mostly though, I think I'm pretty good at figuring out what a song needs and resisting the urge to overplay. I'm not there yet, but I want to be the kind of bassist I really respect: one who is capable of playing extremely complex, difficult lines, but is smart enough not to.

Yeah... same as most people here. I feel I'm doing pretty good for having only played a year and a half, and still using substandard equipment. Buying myself a new bass soon, which will be good, as it won't have the twisted neck and fret buzzing that my current one does.

I know I'm still years away from getting to another level. As someone else said, the more I learn, the more I understand how little I know. I also want to learn some theory eventually.

I have put in a LOT of effort in my bass playing and I think I'm a good player at what I do although I still have much to learn and improve on. I may not be able to do slappings neither am I a chop-master but mainly I want to focus on what is needed in the music that I play instead of what I can play.

While I have been at this in one form or another for some years now, I feel like I'm just getting started.

- I'll never be really good
- But I have specific goals, and I'm working on them
- I think I cover the job in the types of bands I play in these days
- No matter how far I get, I am really enjoying the journey

I'm perfect, and never need to practice. Ever.
