What does "greasy" mean in terms of music

I tired to find the answer on the net. I've seen Grease bands, ads for rock n greasy blues and even articles discussing greasy licks. I'm not sure I understand what it means.

Does it mean playing up and down the neck?

If you know what it means and have some examples fire away. Much appreciated.

I always took “grease” to mean embellishments: slurs, hammer-ons, pull-offs, etc.

I could be wrong though.

The bass player for Stevie Ray Vaughn was greasy. The bass player for Bonnie Raitt is greasy. It's a feel.

Not so sure about what "greasy" means but Tommy Shannon is an absolute legend IMHO. If that's greasy, lube me up.

Kinda like the same context as funky or jazzy, kinda hard to pin down exactly, but when you hear it, you know it. To me "greasy" in this context means playing that is really down & dirty or gritty, if you will.

My first band in high school was a "grease band" Sha Na Na knockoff called Buddy Weiser and the Hops. But, to me, a "greasy" feel is more phrasing than Brylcreme. It is more a matter of waiting for the backbeat and (for me) slurring the m-M3rd in the lines.

Here is my amateurish attempt at it. It is a feel that fits certain tunes more than others.

IMO. There are surely better examples.

Go to YouTube.
Search for Betty Davis' "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up".

Repeat as necessary.

Greasy is slick, smooth, sweet, and sexy.

that Betty Davis stuff is awesome. Kind of funky, dirty, slippery and crispy all at the same time.

Trying to explain this is like trying to explain that a Tele would sound punchy-as-hell playing a bass line.

Speaking purely personally, the first thing that "greasy" brings to mind is the three original Stooges albums.

If any band were to be cited, it would have to be Joe Cocker and The Grease Band

I always thought it was slow and funky.

Not so much the bass part alone, on this track, but just the whole band layin' down the grease here

Bonnie Raitt - Tangled and Dark
