Can someone explain?
The 60's, 70's, 80's exploded with great bands,
do you remember when:
the beatles,
the who,
creedence clearwater revival,
the police,
jefferson airplane,
alice cooper,
queen,
led zeppelin,
deep purple,
iron maiden,
judas priest,
van halen,
scorpions,
kiss,
abba,
jimi hendrix,
etc.. etc.. was the biggest bands in the world ?
And what happened then:
Backstreet boys,
nickelback,
n' sync,
spice girls,
britney spears,
take that,
westlife,
etc.. now he have a bunch of pop artists who can't even write their own music at the center of attention.. we also got a new wave of EMO bands, rap etc..
I dont listen to more than 1 or 2 bands formed later than the 80's, i think most of the music today is complete worthless in all genres..

Stain
Les Claypool will go down in history

You skipped the whole Grunge movement.

Over time those have been forgotten, and now we think the good bands are the only ones that existed back then.
Still, bands of the Beatles caliber can't be expected to appear regularly. Just like Mozart was a one-off kind of guy.

07 is going to be a good year, there are going to be a lot of comebacks.

Last I heard. Jimmy says he's up for it. Robert says no way. JPJ thinks they've lost his phone number.

| | | | I think music today is the best its been in 20 years. There are so many great bands around! The pop crap that the threadstarter listed all peaked in popularity ten years ago - I wouldn't think of them as todays music.
Modern music I listen to a lot at the moment: Mastodon, High On Fire, Isis, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Brant Bjork, Mondo Generator, Fu Manchu, Mark Lanegan, Death From Above 1979, Cansei der Ser Sexy, Desert Sessions, Lacuna Coil, The Atomic Bitchwax, Pelican and Yawning Man. |

I really doubt that the Pussycat Dolls or Fallout Boy are really going thought of terribly highly of in 20 years. |

IMO, i'm kinda tired of the whole 'britney, christina, nsync, music is dead' argument. heck, it's been ten years, get over it! besides, i'm sure people were saying that about the monkees, herman's hermits, new kids on the block, duran duran (who are actually really good), kajagoogoo, 4 non blondes, dishwalla.......
but i guess it depends on what you're looking for. i kinda like that there are no superbands, just a lot of great bands all over the world. and more importantly, that we have the technology to access and learn more about them.
so, in essence, all this talk about 'music is dead' is really just a bunch of laziness. but that's just me.

Rated by "yays" and "boos", we can clearly see that they have always been bands that suck, often outweighing the good bands. |

Is music dead? | I don't know where you were in the 80's, I was still a baby, but when I grew into a teenager in the 90's, I remember thinking how much of a musical wasteland the 80's were. All the great hardcore and punk bands that came out of it I never thought of as 80's bands because I associated the 80's with bad bad bad hair metal and uber-cheesy synth pop. Beyond a few great Brit bands like the Cure, Smiths and Joy Division/New Order and some underground American acts, I still think the 80's were a pretty bad time for music.
I also don't want to be judgemental, but a few of the groups you listed would probably be considered "what is/was wrong with music " as oppsed to "great bands". Abba, The Scorpions and Queen to name few.

| | put a bird on it | | Join Date: Dec 2000 Location: Minnesota | | Good music is still out there, its just a matter of just looking for it. The music industry has seemed to cater more to the business end of things, so mainsteam music hasn't really caught my attention, but there are still good bands around.
The easiest thing you can do is go to a local bar that has a band and support your local music scene. there may be a band better than the Beatles in your own hometown but you'd never know if they can't get any kind of following.
Also the mainstream audience has an evolving taste. back in the 70s maybe more people liked guitar solos--today that has evolved into more on an emphasis to either dance, talk about murder, money and women as fast as they can, show off their parts, or talk about how sad they are (despite the fact they are making millions )
the only way that music is dead is if you kill it. If you are sick of the music scene, then get a band together and improve it |

I'll certainly agree that New Order/Joy Division and the Smiths were good, but the simple fact is that many other good 80s bands have been buried and forgotten about. Like Level 42.
Their bassist/lead singer Mark King is one of the best slap bassists ever, and an excellent singer also.
Also try the band Status Quo. They're strictly a 60s band but their album In The Army (released 1986) is typical of their unique sound.
Try LOOKING for good music instead of being stereotypical.

In its final season it was the #1 or 2 show on TV. But if you take the number of people actually watching it at that time, it wouldn't have cracked the top 10 a few years ealier. By that time the TV population had gotten accustomed to watching HBO, A&E, etc. Mutch wider spectrum than when Friends first came out.
Everyone can make a decent sounding cd. Music is out there, you just have to look for it harder.
