at this time Parliament was in Motown and hadn't developed the identity that was to come. "America Eats Its Young" had some moments where you get the feeling they were on to something, A Joyful Process, Loose Booty, but Maggot Brain got most of the attention on that LP, next Cosmic Slop inched them a little further along but Hardcore Jollies and Let's Take It To The Stage pushed Funkadelic into their evolving identity while LP's like Parliaments Clones of Dr. Funkenstein and especially Uncle Jams Army and One Nation with Junie Morrison and Bootsy and Chocolate City clearly established P-Funk, Parlet, Brides, Bootsy's Rubber Band as funksters of the highest order without peers in what they did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0a1d9V_9js
I was strung out on Bach, And Beethoven was my thing, I dug jazz, I dug rock, Anything with a swing
Then I ran into a friend Who told me there was so much more, Find the void that you missed, There is plenty to explore
And if that ain't funky, fat meat ain't greasy.

Take Jazz, for example...you have great artists like Wynton Marsalis who would have been right there with the best of the original artists in the older days. Country? You have great artists like Junior Brown and George Straight, Brad Paisley and others.
But strangely, Funk seems to be really lacking in that respect. Seems like by 1984, it had pretry much disappeared, soon to be replaced by hip hop as the dominant black style.
Unfortunate, because Funk was good music played by real musicians with a whole mess of talent!
Last year, my band played at a venue that Chicago and EWF were playing at. As a result, after our set we were given choice tickets (right next to the mixing board).
Phillip Bailey was like, the best singer I have ever seen live. No auto tune, no tricks, just incredible singing. His voice could go from angelic falsetto highs to baritone lows at light speed. The man had total control of what he was doing.
Frankly, the band still rocks. Lucky for us several of these bands are still performing, even creating new music.
You can search youtube, but there is a clip of Steve Arrington, showing what he is doing now. Its religions music, of course....but still funky and the track I heard could easily have been on the Hall of Fame album.

TEAR THE ROOF OFF THE SUCKER! | Yes!!! Funk isn't just a bunch of musicians who can play a tight groove. Lyrics like this were unheard of, especially on the radio, before Parliament. "We gonna turn this mutha OUT!" This was a take-no-prisoners approach to the funk; George Clinton & Co. solidified funk as a genre of its own.

His singing reminds me of Louis Armstrong and Jimmy Durante in that, despite the fact that it's nothing like the vocals of a typical great lead singer, it just works in its context. You can't deny George Clinton's status in funk any more than you can deny Steven Spielberg's status in filmmaking.
