what is happening to the modern rhythm section?!?!?!?

since when did bass become a guitar????

it aggrivates for the life of me how most bass players in todays popular bands:

1. use a pick
2. play in usually quarter notes, completely ignoring the drums.

now im only 20, but i guess i come from the old school where bass & drums needed to be tight, the bass following the kick as a guide; where a pick was rediculous because its so limiting: any sound you want you can get with your fingers.

looking at the greatest bands in history (led zeppelin, rush, king crimson, yes) & you see that they rhythms in those bands were not only creative, but flawlessly tight, with no gratuitous runs or fills. but now you have bands like green day, nirvana, taking back sunday who have completely abandoned the bedrock of musical composition.

does anyone else share this frustration with me????? or am i just anal & crazy?

I agree with the rhythm part but not the pick part. Some pick players kickass.

It's a tool in the toolbox like any other.

As for this thread, it's been there, done, and already sold out of shirts. It always ends the same, flame wars. Do a search of you'd like to check out past carnages.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.
