I have been listening to The Black Keys today to find out what all the hoopla is about with this band. They are okay but nothing spectacular. They sure must have listened to a lot of T-Rex, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Neil Young, and bands with loads of fuzz guitar since they have a very retro sound reminiscent of those acts. At least they don't sound like much of the auto-tuned nonsense on the radio these days.

Lettuce's new disc "Fly", recorded and co-produced by fellow TB'er John Davis (I forget his handle at the moment...) which is very good, some of the tunes are starting to sink into my soul now. Lettuce features Krasno and Evans of Soulive, so there's a definite jazz-meets-funk overlay to most of the tunes, but "Do it Like You Do" is a bit stankier, and it has some vocals.

Also really digging fellow TB'er Jean Baudin's amazing "Mechanisms", a solo bass tour-de-force. It's not so "in your face" and is focused on excellent compositions that I guess could be considered ambient, although direct focused listening is also extremely rewarding. One of the best things I've heard in a long time. Taste is paramount, then a boat-load of chops, and finally the best pedal board on TB Effects put to good use in the service of the compositions. Even my wife digs this disc, and she's a tough critic.

Lately?

Not much, however it's been Kamelot, Epica, Dream Theater, and Opeth.

I grew up with Iron Maiden and John Williams film scores, so I've always been a fan of over produced epic metal.

I've been listening to a lot of Chicago lately. I really like the bass in "Does Anybody Really Know What Time it is?"

The formula is fine. This was my first exposure to a "real jazz" album, and I was just surprised to hear that formula pretty much from beginning to end. But I do like it...especially since it gives the musicians the opportunity to speak individually within a certain framework. I'm still amazed that these guys were improvising a lot of this stuff.

Coltrane makes my head spin...can't believe the same guy who did Favorite Things came up with Ascension.

Someone on TB linked to a Clatter video as an example of a Ric tone they liked. So I've been checking out Clatter recently. Pretty cool stuff...
