What if Cliff Burton was still alive

Sign in to disble this ad
A ffriendand I were having this conversation yesterday.Lets say that there never was any bus accident in Sweden that killed Cliff Burton and he was still alive. Would he still be with Metallica or would he have left the band at some point? Would Metallica still have made albums like St. Anger if he were still around?

I say that he would have played with them until after The Black Album. And then left because of the tension in the band and all that hoopla they made over Napster.

If he were alive today...

he would be pissed that they put him in a coffin, and he would be scratching and clawing to get out.

Well one can only dream that Lars would have been the one thrown out of the bus (I'd still love to catch him in an alley). IMHO, Cliff was responsible for most of their music and sound. He was credited on one or two songs from the Justice album, but I feel he had more to do with A.J.F.A than the little credit they give. If he was still around I think Metallica would have progressed and matured with their sound like they did through the first four full length albums. I don't think Load,Reload,St. Anger and the rest would have been made, or would have sounded like they did. One of the other downfalls is that Jasonic was never allowed to influence the sound of the band or participate much in the music writing. It was claimed that Lars, James and Kirk would repeatedly tell Jason "You're no Cliff". Had Jason been allowed more influence I don't feel those substandard albums would have been replaced. As it says on my profile page, Metallica died with Cliff.
R.I.P. Cliff and Metallica '86

On a side note. Trujillo (sp?) from Suicidal is one of my major influences, now I'm sure they'll ruin him too.

If I was the new bassist, and they told me that I was no Cliff, I would've taken a deep breath, and said, "You're right! I'm still breathing!"

the surviving members of metallica stated they were profoundly changed by the accident and cliff's death. would there have even been a black album (or and justice for all for that matter).

personally, i like to abuse those who try and abuse me. while i have nothing against trujillo, i wish newsted (or even burton) would have been replaced by paul gray of slipknot (who is reported to bully the other 12 members ).

that would have been interesting.

Because being able to beat someone up is the chief requirement for becoming a metal bass player.

Cliff was a hippie, by the way.

I think Cliff would have left... hopefully to reform Agents of Misfortune with Jim Martin! Good lord, why didn't they put out an album!? As Eric said, he was a total hippie: Agents of Misfortune was awesome hippie metal.

considering paul grey would have been the new guy, and probably substantially younger, i doubt paul would bully the other guys...although maybe metallica would be 33% pile-drivingly heavier

If Cliff was alive today...

First of all, he'd be one bad ass player (but that's a given) ...he'd be one of the best players on the planet. He would have kept Metallica from sucking by keeping the focus on the music. All of the Anti Napster crap never would have happened and Metallica would be one of the greatest bands ever.

But, Cliff is dead and metallica sucks... they sure used to be cool though.

If Cliff were alive today his bellbottoms would've grown large enough to swallow Lars' ego.

actually he would have been 14 , so im not sure if he would have made a difference sonically at that point either. for some reason i was thinking he was my age.

my post was less time line/specific bassist oriented, and more of the idea of the replacement for burton being the type of bassist who would have dished out as much as he recieved from lars and james.

for instance. what if burtons replacement would have been...lemmy!

Cliff Burton's Band

I once read somewhere that Cliff had an idea for a band which would have him playing Lead Bass with distortion and wah, like he does on some of the more Cliff oriented Metallica songs, and that he viewed Metallica as simply a platform for starting this other band.

Of course I don't know if these rumours are true or not, but considering the way James reacted to Jasons side-projects, I don't think Cliff Burton would have stayed in Metallica for very long if he had tried to start this project.

Would Metallica had acheived the massive succsess they did with the Black Album if Cliff Burton had still been alive?
Would the Black Album even exist?

This is all speculation, but it it pretty interesting to think about.
Regardless of what would have happened, the death of Cliff Burton was a huge loss to music.

25%.

Those of you putting Cliff on a level above James Kirk and Lars, what makes you think he would've kept them making thrash metal as opposed to switching into a more rock-oriented style of music? His limited knowledge of theory?

It's easy to put him above Lars - because Lars is such a complete moron.
