What If The Legends Had never Died?

heres an interisting one.what would have happened if for example bon scott and cliff burton didnt die.where would ac/dc and metallica be today?would they be here?

Your thoughts please......

IMO, Bon Scott and Cliff Burton are legends BECAUSE they died. I don't think they're continued existence would have granted them as much fame as passing away in their prime did.

I agree with Eric on this one....
We take everything for granted, and never realize what we had until it's suddenly stripped from us. Certainly those guys were cool, and wonderful bass players, but it's nothing to think "what if they were still alive", really.

If Phil Lynott hadn't been an addict, he'd still be with us.

He may be one of the few deceased players who may be worthy of the term 'legend', as he broke so many rules with Thin Lizzy - the black Irish, bass playing, songwriting front man. He really had it all.

What he'd be doing now is debatable. I wish he was still around doing it though...

As to Bon Scott, now there was a singer.... not a bass player or guitarist, but a real good singer. If he was still with us, we'd have had more of the same... like we have from AC/DC anyway. They have done so well to bounce back like they have, compared to INXS who are simply struggling, but there you go..

IIRC, AC/DC was becoming huge while Bon Scott was still alive.

But, try this flipside: The Who became huge while all members were still alive. John Entwistle was worshiped while he was still alive. Keith Moon was emulated by drummers all over the world while he was still alive.

It's not just in death that someone becomes a legend. Geddy Lee ain't dead...Victor Wooten ain't dead...Michael Manring ain't dead...

Yeah, you might have missed something like the fact that Bon Scott wasn't a bass player.

If Sid Vicious hadn't od'd, kids probably would probably realize that he really wasn't anything like Mclaren made him out to be and we wouldn't have so many Vicious-o-philes.

If only.

It's funny how the image of the legend can be so radically divorced from that actual person. Myth substitutes fact because now that this person is a legend, they exist outside real history.

Keith Moon is an interesting example, especially when comparing him with Bonham. They died like 3 years apart, and I'd imagine the Who were more popular over a longer period of time than Led Zeppelin. Moon's legend has kind of faded, while Bonham's got stronger. When you mention Bohnam, he was "that phenomenally massive drummer from Zeppelin," but a surprising number of people will equate Moon as "that crazy drummer from the Who."

It might be because the band kept going...

If the legends had never died I'd imagine they'd be crapping all over their beutiful careers right now. Very few people(even the genius's) manage to have a consistent output of great material.

Also, it is my hypothesis that is offered enough money, Jaco would have played with Kenny G. Kenny could claim that he played "real" Jazz and Jaco would have a heap of money to support his Coke habit.

Interesting thread. Let's take Jaco for instance. Back when he was still alive he was doing some pretty amazing things with his bass. I wonder what he would have been like today, and what bass [and number of strings] he would be playing?

Then that makes me wonder, . . . . . .WOULD he have been much better. Is there a moment when even the greats hit a brick wall in terms of their ability? Hmmmmm

I don't think all that many people would like Nirvana if Kurt Cobian were still alive. People just seem to get more popular when they're dead. They also have a strange habit of producing albums from beyond the grave.

Is the comparison between Morrison and Cobain valid? I havn't listed to Nirvana, (only what was on the radio), Doors i have listened to. Seemed to be thought provoking....I myself just can't see holding Cobain up to Morrison. Is it only Cobains generation needing/wanting their own drugged up bothered and disturbed rocker to morn over? I ramble...

So I was supposed to see Stevie Ray Vaughn a few weeks out before his death...bummer. Now how bout him or Hendrix for that matter...who was supposed to be the great inovator...where would he have gone talent wise? It seems that we have our generations inovators in Satriani, Vai, etc...but I stopped buying thir CD's because it all seems like the same ol' stuff.....seems like we would get to that pont with anyone...again I ramble....need sleep.

To true. It makes me wonder... if Jaco were still alive but was now playing with, for example, Blink 182 (complete speculation) and rooting it up while providing no lowend support, would he still be respected for his earlier work?

Cliff Burton, still alive, takes on a drug habit. He is kicked from the band for being antiproductive and is sent to rehab. While in rehab he meets Jaco, also in rehab, and they start playing together. 4 or 5 months go by and they are both clean. Cliff gets Jaco to sign on for a duet record, and being Cliff Burton, the record gets HUGE attention from the public. The record becomes a smash success as it is appealing to both hardcore metallica fans and the jazz crowd. Jaco is now big in the public eye, ripping it up on the mainstream right along side Burton, who is now a big name in the jazz scene.

I've had WAY to much sugar today.
