Am I missing something? Isn't it just a snare or possibly a 14" ride tom?

the rattly sounding thing RIGHT after he says "from the top"? If so, I'm sure its a latin percussive instrument of some kind but I haven't the foggiest clue of what it's called.

Not it's not a drum, cymball or high hats. It sounds like something is spinning. My son actually said he knows what it is from a music camp that he went to. But doesn't know the name of it. He said it's like a block but has a bar that comes out the back of it and around and it makes that spinning sound....kinda of like a shaker type thing. I have no idea.

it's a good thing you remembered, because even though I own one (and play it!) I'd have never guessed what it was from that recording(s) or your "description" of it!

[They don't spin! It is a U shaped rod that has a hollow box on one end with loose metal pieces inside it that rattle and the other end of the U has a large wooden ball on it. You hold it by the bottom of the U and slap the ball into your palm. That makes the whole thing act like a huge tuning fork which shakes the box that makes the rattle]

For things that "spin" I was thinking of a cabasa. That is a sort of drum thing with a handle out the back. There are beaded chains (like a lamp pull or key chain) around the drum. When you get really good you can get the chains spinning around the drum giving a rattly sound.
