I was (obviously) on drums (still like them). But my first
attempt was a tenor sax -- oooohhhh was i ever bad!

Stopped cause the wife HATED it (maybe rightly so).

what did you play and why did you change?

Used to play lead guitar. I converted because good bassists are in short supply where I'm located.

Finger-style acoustic guitar and cello. I still play both, but bass is numeral uno.

I was a drummer of 5 years before I picked up bass. When I was 16, some older friends were starting a band, and they needed a bass player. Bass players were pretty scarce around here in those days, so I decided to fill the gap - and I'm glad I did.

I have played the sax since 4th grade (about 28 years). As of now, I have 1 soprano, 2 altos, 2 tenors and a baritone. I also have about 20 different mouthpieces, most vintage. I got the bass because I have always liked bass lines and there is not too much in the way of sax in Who or Zeppelin songs...

i started playing piano when i was 3 years old. i quickly took up g.i. joe and star wars at age 7 and picked up guitar when i was 15. i played that in several bands up until about 10 years ago when my church needed a bassist. i reluctantly said i would do it and quickly fell in love with it and now i'm 33 and still loving the bass. i do play some acoustic now and then just to keep up my dexterity on the guitar. really, guitar and bass are so similar theoretically it's really a good idea to keep up with guitar if that's where you started first. both instruments will compliment the other and make you a better player all around.

The Tuba. I was thinking about learning the guitar or bass, but bass seemed like it would be an easier transition.

Trombone for nine years. Being able to read bass clef music made the transition easier.

I started out on alto sax, then to tenor, then to Baritone sax and then to the tuba. Along the way, I picked up a little guitar. In high school, I played the tuba and the bass in jazz band.

I played baroque recorder, professionally. Traditional baroque music, often with chamber groups or as solo, and jazz similar to Herbie Mann.
