For me, a great interview occurs when the interviewer knows how to ask pertinent and intelligent questions, and the interviewee has something insightful and meaningful to say. This happens when journalists like Jim Roberts, Chris Jisi, or maybe Anil Prasad interview Anthony Jackson, Lee Sklar, Marcus Miller, Pino Palladino, Will Lee, or Victor Wooten. Those player simply have the decades of hard-won experience as well as the ability to eloquently express themselves and their ideas, and a good journalist gives them the platform to do that.

In a industry where the veneer seems to be more important than what's really inside and on the table, the interviews of the aforementioned artists prove them to be the real deal.

At the end of the day, I've been most impressed by the handful of interviews Anthony Jackson has done over the years.

Steve Swallow, in Bass Player last year.

To me, it was Mr. Swallow that made the interview memorable rather than the journalist (I can't remember who did it).

All who aspire to be more as a musician should give it a read. The interview even compelled me to revisit his catalog.

What a wonderful player.

Bass Magzine, the rock issue a few months back, two great interview's IMO, first was Rex Brown, second they got Rex to interview Geezer Butler for them. As for what made them great, just the insight into each players style, fave instruments etc.

The online magazine (Bass Musician?). The Victor Wooten interview.
I'm not super familiar with Victor, know his playing somewhat (mostly via the Flecktones).
His attitude and his thoughts, his ideas about learning music, and about his camp (learning in nature rather than locked in a room) were very mind-opening to me.

Bass Player recently did Peter Cetera.
...someone that was long overdue.

Guitar Player did the 'best' AJ interview...IIRC, it was '86. Robert Fripp is on the cover.

I remember that one, it really was excellent.

I'm not sure Bass Player ever did an interview I would call "killer". But that's why I stopped subscribing 20 years ago.

I liked the AJ interview they did, in the issue that has bill laswell on the cover.
Other than that...I think I agree.

I enjoyed the Family Man interview in Bass Player Oct. '07. I haven't read any other interviews with him, although I've enjoyed his work for many years.
Also Victor Wooten always has cool stuff to say.

In the Randy Jackson thread about the 'idiots that read Bass Player'...I took some flak because, I guess, I defended/still read/buy/collect the magazine.
I will say I understand the issues many of you have...July's Bass Player is a great example of what's not right with the magazine-
This month has Barre Phillips & Jamaladeen Tacuma. When you have two heavyweights like that...EXPLOIT IT! Each guy deserves an extended feature vs. the (maybe) 3-4 pages they received.
I'm not sure if it's dumbed down for the LCD or is it geared for the short attention span of its target audience...?

I totally agree but an extended feature would be a miracle, especially one on Jamaaladeen.

Bass Player's interview with Peter Cetera was one of the most captivating and intersting of any in a long time, not that I haven't liked or enjoyed the others. It's also time they had an in depth interview with John Wetton.
