SO.....I'm just getting into the bass & I'm really digging the fretless sound as a solo instrument.

Give me a list of some players to listen to.

I've got....

Victor Wooten A Show Of Hands

Trip Wamsley Curve

I've also got some jazz discs that include...

Jaco Pastorius This Is Jazz: Weather Report & This Is Jazz: The Jaco Years

Bela Fleck & The Flecktones LIVE

Charles Mingus

What else is out there to inspire me & obvious must haves ????

Thanks !

Michael Manring - Soliloquy: The only solo bass album I've found that I can listen to for more than ten minutes without getting distracted. Absolutely stunning.

Tony Franklin.
Back in the day when I first started playing bass, the first time I ever really noticed a fretless was Tony playing in The Firm. This was a supergroup led by ex-Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers with Jimmy Page on guitar, Franklin on bass and ex-Uriah Heep drummer Chris Slade. It was really interesting to hear a fretless bass in a contemporary rock band. It's worth a listen.

Oh, and I just picked up a Stevie Wonder Greatest Hits double disc.

Did he use the same guys or was it mainly different studio guys?

Sir Duke & Do I Do stand out bass-wise, but I've always loved the song Overjoyed.....hearing Victor Wooten play it is just awe-inspiring.
