Just curious. And don't count double albums or triple albums(you can choose of the the CD's though). I just was very curious on what the longest CD is. If you want, you can also post the shortest.

it's probably by dream theater.

and i probably can't listen to more than three seconds of it.

or one of mahler's symphonies, perhaps. which i would much rather listen to.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor's album Yanquin U.X.O. is seventy-five minutes long. I think it's the longest single disc album I own.

Graeme

EDIT: 74:57 to be precise.

Why 74? Can't CD-RW's hold 80 minutes?

As far as a single disc goes, I believe Blood Sugar Sex Magik is 73:55 which means that there is only 5 seconds of space left on the CD.

A pair of Dave Matthews Band albums ("Crash and "Before These Crowded Streets") weigh in at about 70 minutes each.

One of the shortest albums I own is Weezer's Eponymous 3rd album ("The Green Album") which is something like 28 minutes.

'if i remember correctly....

the first cds made were 74 minutes because the want to fit beethoven's 9th on one disc i found this quote:

"Beethoven's Ninth is arguably the most popular and influential piece of classical music ever written. This reputation is mainly due to a seemingly simple melody introduced in the final part of the symphony: the "Ode to Joy". It is probably not an overstatement to call this melody a musical archetype (probably more so than the first notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony). Rarely does one meet a person who can't hum the tune, but almost just as rare are people who know the source of this now almost universal melody. It has become an indelible part of european musical culture, and has even reached beyond the scope of europe. The physical dimensions of the compact disc were even extended to make room for the longest known recording at the time - 74 minutes; this can be read about in an article entitled "Beethoven of greater significance than Technology"."

Storage capacity and playing time
The original target storage capacity for a CD was an hour of audio content, and a disc diameter of 115 mm was sufficient for this. However, according to Philips, Sony vice-president Norio Ohga suggested extending the capacity to 74 minutes to accommodate a complete performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony;[3], however Kees Immink of Philips denies this.[1]The extra playing time subsequently required the change to a 120 mm disc.
According to a Sunday Tribune interview [1] the story is slightly more involved. At that time (1979) Philips owned Polygram, one of the world’s largest distributors of music. Polygram had set up a large experimental CD disc plant in Hanover, Germany, which could produce huge amounts of CDs having, of course, a diameter of 11.5 cm. Sony did not yet have such a facility. If Sony had agreed on the 11.5 cm disc, Philips would have had a significant competitive edge in the market. Sony was aware of that, did not like it, and something had to be done. The long-playing time of Beethoven's Ninth imposed by Ohga was used to push Philips to accept 12 cm, so that Philips’ Polygram lost its edge on disc fabrication.
The 74-minute playing time of a CD, being more than that of most long-playing vinyl albums, was often used to the CD’s advantage during the early years when CDs and LPs vied for commercial sales. CDs would often be released with one or more bonus tracks, enticing consumers to buy the CD for the extra material. However, attempts to combine double LPs onto one CD occasionally resulted in an opposing situation in which the CD would actually offer fewer tracks than the LP equivalent. An example is the 1987 album Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me by The Cure, which states in the CD liner notes: "The track Hey You!!! which appears on the double album and cassette has been omitted so as to facilitate a single compact disc." Another example is the original late-1980s Warner Bros. Records reissue of Fleetwood Mac's Tusk album, which substituted the long album version of "Sara" with the shorter single version. Enough complaints were lodged to eventually convince Warner Bros. to remaster the album in the mid-1990s with the original contents intact.

The first G3 Live album (Satriani/Johnson/Vai) is 76:55 long. It was the album that made me realize that CDs' maximum recording capacity was not 74 minutes anymore.

Actually, that CD runs just over 77 minutes... that site must be wrong. It's still hella long. The Mars Volta's Frances the Mute runs just uner 77. Really pushing the limits of CD storage.

I think 80 minutes is tops.

In contrast, my shortest CD is Hemispheres by Rush, which comes in around 34 minutes and change.

I think Frances the Mute and Amputechture by the Mars Volta are around 76:00-77:00.

Metallica's Load is 78:56.

The solo from "The Outlaw Torn" was shortened by about 3-4 seconds to fit into the album.
