When I think about the question for just a moment, 3 things come to mind.

1. A 'stupid' idea.
2. Fearless pursuit of that idea.
3. The work ethic necessary to bring that idea into the interactive paradigm/reality.

Either that or wang chung...

Not being constrained by what the instrument can or can't do. Just because "they" say it can't be done is no reason not to do it.

Of course YMMV IMHO etc.......

The only difference between an innovator and a complete loon is the acceptance of the idea they are trying to give birth to.

This question/answer reminded me of this interview to a truly innovative guy. Hear what he says from 0:50 to 1:44. Not necessarily the answer to Jauqo's question, but food for thought anyway.

the thread/question instantly made me think of this link

How to make a movement. Lessons learned from dancing guy. | Derek Sivers

and in revisiting it, I think the first 2 points kinda fit...

1.) doing something for it's own sake - not trying to start anything.

and

2.) guts to look (sound) a little ridiculous, but not care.

obviously, it needs to be in some way independent of things done before.

"What makes a bass player innovative?"

Doing the unexpected in a way that not only works, but elicits a double-take from other musicians, and makes them want to hear more. The best are cliche'-free.

Some do this rhythmically, some harmonically, some through tone or timbre. Musical innovation transcends the visual.

What makes anybody innovative? "Chance favors the prepared mind." Some ideas:

Intelligence

Knowledge

A comfortable environment, free from the distractions of subsistence and security

Interaction with other creative people

Ability to motivate others to embrace your new ideas

Being a musician first ... and not thinking about the limitations of the instrument

the bass is just part of the musicians "musical voice"...

Timing...

How many undiscoved bands have you heard and thought "Wow! They were way ahead of their time!"??? Quite a few probably.

What about current bands that seem "old-fashioned" or "copy-cats"?

The key is to make a unique sound that is relevant enough to today's music to be accepted, but different enough to leave your audience hungry.

When you date women, you don't wear 70's disco outfits (at least I hope not >.>) or a robotic spacesuit... you wear a MODERN outfit that says, "This is me and I'm the best damn guy you're ever gonna get!"... that's what you do with music

Desire is a sense of longing or object or hoping for an outcome. The same sense is expressed by emotions such as "craving" or "hankering". When a person desires something, their sense of longing is excited by the enjoyment, and they want to take actions to obtain their goal.

I guess the simplistic answer is: "doing something with the bass that has never been done before."

A man invents a thing which could revolutionize the arts, produce mountains of money, and bless the earth, and who will bother with it or show any interest in it?--and so you are just as poor as you were before. But you invent some worthless thing to amuse yourself with, and would throw it away if let alone, and all of a sudden the whole world makes a snatch for it and out crops a fortune.
- The American Claimant-by Mark Twain
