O.k., my little boy (5) loves it when I let him pound on the strings of one of my basses and we make up songs together. He has asked to get both of us "guitars" for Christmas. Well, I got mine last month, but do want to get him something musical. I looked at those tiny Fender Squires, but am hesitant because, perhaps, a keyboard or drums would be better? Anyone have any suggestions for the aspiring five-year-old and his Dad?

I would be a little worried about the scale/size obviously, as it would be difficult, but I suppose if you guage the size of maybe a short scale Squier accordingly, it could be an awesome gift. |

He also has a keyboard--there are 2-note polyphonic ones available at Wal-Mart with built-in beats, drum triggers, etc for $10.00, and I finally got him to start playing with his fingers instead of mashing keys with his fists. He's started playing simple melodies on his grandpa's piano as a result.
I plan on getting him one of the mini-guitars as soon as he's able to hold it, and if he picks it up I'll see about a small-scale DB a few years later. I don't think there's such a thing as too young for an instrument, kids learn much more quickly than adults. If your son can hold it, I say let him try to play it. My son loves pounding on a drum while I play. Makes practicing difficult, but listening to him count off songs and wait for applause after he's done is just too cute for words.

I guess the point I'm making is w/ drums, you have to consider others, especially w/ beginers. I stated on guitar. Can you find a bass he can even hold? |

Get him what he wants. I started accordian at 7 and guitar at 8. Admittedly, my hands were bigger at 8 than they were at 5, but he can do single note things for a while. I got my 2 year old grandson a small acoustic guitar and tuned it in open G. I gave him a ceramic slide. I play steel and dobro, so he can now play along with Grandpa and have a blast. It's the time you spend with him, not the technical quality of the music you make that will make all the difference to him.

My vote is for the Keyboard. Get a pretty decent one that you can play too. I think a good understanding
of the piano keyboard was never detrimental to any musician.
I wish I had started on that rather than a violin at 5, but they
didn't have those in the Dark Ages.
