What is a Musician?

Sign in to disble this ad
at what point are you a musician?
we don't need this to be a flame fest.....because i doubt anyone will be right.
it is probably up to ones interpretation.
i had a guy tell me one time that when you play a song all the way through you are a musician.....i don't think i agree with that.....but i could be wrong.
i am asking this question because i really don't know.
i have a theory...but i want your opinion.

If you have no benefits, no retirement fund, and your rate of pay has not even kept up with inflation over the last 35 years or so, and you have gone from working 6 nights a week to 2 nights a week, and actually feel good about the two nights a week of work, THEN you are a musician

A musician is a bassist. What else do we need to discuss?

Drummers are not musicians. Unless they're wind up monkees with keys protruding from their backs.

Seriously?

I guess if you can fall anywhere in-between, "I suck, but I'm a rock star" to "Virtuoso" you can pick up a "I'm a musician" card at any participating Walmart.

That word has been thrown around so much you could pretty much say everyone is a musician. Just like how everyone is an artist.

I think of a musician as anyone who makes music, a painter is anyone who paints, a sculptor is anyone who makes sculpture, etc. I try to reserve the term "artist" for some who, in any field, truly excels at attempting to achieve the goals they have set for themselves, so long as that goal has taken a fair amount of thought to come up with.

IMHO - Everyone is capable of being a musician, that is the thing that lets humans make music is in all of us. Musicians are the people who connect with that element of existance, use it to add richness to their lives and spend a good bit of time making music (somehow).
