Where I do what I do, that's not always practical or expected to be able to "know the song." When you do sub work a fair amount (i.e., "we need you to know this set of 40 songs in a couple weeks"), they get what they get from me. Which is a good show, signature lines known note-for-note, and everything else played to the feel of the given band.
This sums me up perfectly. Word for word.

I think you hit on the answer to all your concerns of "why me?" You pay attention to the details, you absorb what has to be done, and you have fun with it. That is what makes this business all worth it. Don't over analyze the why's of things, how perfect should I play, or anything else that gets in the way of you having fun and being good at what you do. Take on the challenges (like learning styles new to you) and just have a ball.

I couldn't even guess I have been playing bass since I was 9 and writing originals since I was 13 I'm 54 a lot of songs have passed through this brain Our current song list has 65 songs on it and we add songs to the play list nearly every week.

Mostly the songs currently played..about 50 but tons more if I hear them/rehearse them again. Do blues tunes count?
