What song still brings a lump to your throat?

Sign in to disble this ad
Everyone's got at least one song that over the years still effects them emotionally. Either sends the chill down your spine in a certain section or brings a lump to your throat when you hear it. For me, there's a tune by The Producers called "Dear John" about a guy that goes off to war and during the song when he gets his "dear John" letter, as the song goes,
Quote:
"they say he died a hero; walked in the line of fire. He held a wrinkled letter; he clutched it tightly as he walked beyond the line..."
The way the music was written to that sent, and still sends, chills down my back!

So! What song still moves you? after all these years?!? (Or, even a current one...!)

Not nearly as poingniant as your example is one I heard on Prairie Home Companion years ago. I don't recall the name of the tune but it was about a cowboy that goes to the local school teacher to learn how to read and write. Eventually he does learn and and he writes something down for the teacher to read. I just remember the line (from the school teacher's point of view), "I guess you know, I love you too". The only other thing I know about the song is that is was written by the same person that wrote "Coward of the County".

"Jocko Homo" by Devo. 30 years ago they tried to tell us all we were de-evolving and getting stupider and stupider and reverting back to apes, and we didn't believe them. And now we can see that they were absolutely right, and it makes me cry.

The Rainbow Connection by Kermit would you believe.

I don't like Mondays - Bob Geldof

Slayer - Dead Skin Mask - That childs voice at the end haunts me and once got me going as I'd just knocked off a series of related books and felt a wave of grief for the victims, families and the authorities dealing with it.

For Whom The Bell Tolls - My Dad liked this song, liked the intensity of Cliff's twin eye-point move as we watched him play the "Take a look to the sky just before you die" on the Cliff Em All video and I remember listening to it on the way to the Hospice ward as I just missed him to say Goodbye. Sometimes I get a kick in the guts.

Candle in the Wind - Elton John.

Tears in Heaven.

Not every time I hear it but definitely every time I hear the unplugged version.

I heard it constantly after I learned my college roomate shot and killed himself ...

Who's Gonna Drive You Home, Tonight

I don't know if that is the right title, but it hits me in the gut every time.

I think it was called "Drive". It's a very emotionally compelling song for me too.

Yes indeed I am.

BTW, apropos of nothing, I have fond memories of Fife (at least part of it), having spent my third year of university on exchange at St. Andrews.

Cats in the Cradle, but I like the Ugly Kid Joe cover for some reason. Covers aren't usually my cup-o-tea.
