What is with the term "Franken" anymore??

Sign in to disble this ad
As the title states. The term seemed to surface with some very custom or somewhat hacked instruments such as Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstein guitar or Wolfgangs bass.

When I think of the term it is pieces and parts from instruments that were never meant to be mated together, but someome made them work..

But now the term seems to be misused for just about anything.. Frankenstein Not a jazz neck on a precision (or vice versa) which you have been able to buy in some form from Fender.....

Thoughts? Discuss.....

A Jazz neck on a Precision bass is a Frankenstein. For me, changing the neck is the threshold. A bass with a different neck than it was born with is a Frankenstein. Changing out the tuners or pickups or bridge is what I would term a "mod."

And by the way.... that EVH'ed Precision is RAD!

I think mine could match your definition...

Swapping necks is cool...but not "franken" enough. More like a transplant.
But that's "franken" in itself...hmm...

Something built up from parts of different instruments. My number 1 Precision has parts from at least 3 different ones. All original Fender bits from the '70's and '80's.

Really, it means taking parts from other makes and piecing a bass together.
Fender body, Epiphone neck, etc.
Just like Dr. Frankenstein used parts from different bodies to make his "monster".
Loosely used term for any non-stock replacement part replacing a stock part like P body with a J neck...
Modded is usually swapping out tuners or preamps or pups....

I'm thinking the term has more to do with a modded ax in the context of Al Franken, the senator from Minnesota.

It pertains to any modification that was funny at first but now appears silly and senseless.

I think the Fender-Birds where one of the original 'Frankenstein' type instruments.

so, to be "frankened", it has to be done crudely? to me it's just parts from different basses, non-stock parts. but, i guess that really isn't specific enough to discern it from "modded"......but don't they kinda overlap?

Exactly. IIRC, in Shelley's book, the creature's name was "Adam".

God created Adam, so Dr. Frankenstein created Adam.

A neck switch from a bass which comes from the same company, fits without modification and a configuration you can buy from said company, is not "Franken". IMHO... Most of the time people would not even be able to tell...

Now if you pulled a neck from an OLP, MM or Gibson and put it on a Fender, then were talking Franken... Route out a body and put a pick-up in that was never meant to be there.... Etc...
