What tuning do you play in? Alter's? Standards?

Just wondering.

I play in drop d and in variations of drop d. I for some reason can write more interesting lines in this tuning and I love the way an open D sounds when your nailing it with a pick or fingers.

DADG and DADA for 4 strings.
DADGC and DADAD for 5 ers (When I get one )
ADADGC and ADADADG for 7's (When I get one )

What about you guys?

I play standard, although for my guitars I tune down to CFA#D#GC (aka the Hardcore power chord tone of doom )

Why I haven't bought a 7-String yet I'm not sure

Standard and d,a,d,g.

I'd love to get a hipshot, but I think a new bass is in order long before that.

BEADG, hipshot to AEADG fretted and fretless bolt-ons

EADGC fretless neckthru

the '58 Precision is EADG hipshot to DADG, but I haven't used it since I got the newest custom fretted and fretless bolt-ons . . . maybe I should think about selling it (after returning it to a more "stock" set-up). Anybody interested?

BTW, I've had that '58 since 1967 - 38 years!!!

I almost exclusively play in standard (BEADG). There are a few songs that I'll play with drop D if I need to play D open for some parts (Hammer-ons with D being the low note). But I usually try to work around that by playing D on the B string. But, of course, there are some songs where I just can't do that comfortably, so I play BDADG, and don't touch the B string much.

I play a half step down, with a hipshot on the low E.

I tune to BEADGC on my bass and I have two guitars that I tune to EADGCF or BEADGC.

Yeah, I play in standard and drop-D only as well. I was thinking of getting a Hipshot, but I can't decide if it's worth it!

Something I want to experiment with...major 3rds

Has anyone tried tuning in major 3rds?

for example:

4 string: e g# c e
or
five string: b d# g b d#
or
six string: b d# g b d# g

This would give you a chromatic scale with one finger per fret. - less shifting around on the fingerboard.
- fingering patterns would be duplicated every 4th string - especially nice on a six string, where the top 3 strings would be the same notes as the bottom 3 (an octave up of course).
- You could use larger gauges on the smaller strings as they are tuned gradually lower (than standard tuning) - giving more consistancy in tone between strings.

D#
G#
C#
F#

I'll occasionally tune up to F flat if I'm subbing for someone.

I have been playing open G tuning at rehearsal for about a month now and nobody else in the band has noticed.

Right now, I'm tuned a half step down, EbAbDbGb, simply for the open Eb/D#, which I've been needing in a few of our originals. I was tired of always tuning between songs, and I hadn't really considered detuning every string. I like it, though.
