What type of band should I look for?

Sign in to disble this ad
Alright, I have started playing again after a 15 years hiatus (I emigrated to the US in the 90s and sold everything I owned, then was unable to get back into music due to my family and work schedule).

After 6 weeks solid (1 hour a day on average), I have made some strong progress and started to learn new tabs (easy and less easy stuff).

I am not strong on the theory side, if you ask me to walk a C major scale, I will be able to do it, but I have no clue about more complex scales and I can barely read sheet music, I have to use tabs.

I am 39 going on 40, I am not looking to improve my theory that much, I just want to play, basically mostly classic rock, fun covers and good guitar pop.

I am ready to study between practice and show up knowing my part, but nobody should expect me to expertly improvise a bass line.

What type of band should I look for?

Some people say church bands, but I don't know if I have to stay and attend service knowing that I don't agree with everything I hear in churches. Oh and important detail: I am not a Christian.

Should I place an ad saying exactly what I just wrote, saying that I am looking for a band of middle aged idiots looking to do corny covers?

Should I have start my own band or middle aged idiots?

Thanks!

Couple of notes..

1-Place Your Expectations and Availability to practice in the ad

2-To play in a church many do not require you to join - In our church band we're not allowed (too close to home - we're paid staff)

3-Consider an acoutsic duo if you're just considering.

4-A major scale is the building blocks of 90% of what most commercial players use... add the numbers and you'll be tons ahead (there is a good podcast on this)

Remember it's the people.. not the music that makes this happen.. it's a small social club...

Look for pals you like to hang out with.
