Definate hobbiest at the mo. In a band just building up the set list enough to play 3-4 hrs of tunes. When we get their we can start gigging every weekend. Well thats the plan anyway.

Even then it will still be a part time thing. I cant see me quitting my day-job haha

It depends on when you want your answer. In the late '80's and early '90's I was making good money on bass. I still had a day job, but often made more with music than I did at 'work'.

Then our crowd went away. And I got a night job so I can't really gig except for the occasional jiongle on a day off. So I was a semi-pro, but now I'm part bedroom bassist, part just plain working bassist.

It all depends how you look at it. Which one do you want?

From the beginning I've been a weekend gig player, but my main job is as a music teacher at the university, so I'm constantly in touch with the instrument (currently I have 18 bass guitar and 4 DB students) => I'm not sure about what option should I choose.

Played full time and made a living for years, but then I had children. I can support 1 person with music, but not 4 (plus doctors, dentists, daycare workers, babysitters, etc etc).
So now it's day job and weekend rockin' for me.

at this point my day job pays way more than playing bass ever could. I'm ok with the gigging hobbyist role though. Because, I'm doing it now for the love of playing

I guess hobbiest is the closest choice for me. I was working with a guitarist somewhat regular writing and recording but as we got busier with jobs and family situations, things changed. Instead of getting together to record, practice, and try out new ideas we tried something that would work better. We'd record tracks, give the other guy a CD, let him work on it, add tracks to it, make a new CD with the additional tracks, return it, and repeat that cycle.

Unfortunately he moved about a year ago so we no longer work together. Since then we've only gotten together once and we've only traded tracks once so it's been going even more slowly than before. I may be more of a bedroom hobbiest at this point but I'm not giving hope that we'll actualy finish this project. Of course, if we would have focused on our own material instead of learning covers to jam on when we got together we'd be even farther along, but that was fun too.

In any case, as I've been practicing on my own and am hoping to find others to play with occassionaly so I can legitimately move back into the hobbiest category.

Musical mercenary wasn't a category, so...

I guess I'm a bass player that plays in one band regularly (4 to 8 times a month), and two other bands as needed, or fill in with others when called, and I happen to be free, or doing some on-call studio work, etc.

Sometimes I give lessons. Other than that it's just a hobby with me (so long as cash is involved).

I guess i could call myself a semi pro. I have played around with many different bands, and am currently giving original music a shot. We're in the studio right now recording a full length album, and hope to be on the road full time by this time next year. I also teach lessons in my spare time for free, just because there arent enough bass players in this town, I might as well do my part to lure some people to the dark side!
