Hello Bassplayers!
I don't play bass but my partner is mad abou it - he has a room full of gear and stays up all night researching bass and bass-related consumables, essentially leaving me a bass widow ... I want to get him something bassy for chistmas which will astound him, but no more than $500...
Any ideas?
PS: Love to hear from other bass widows, want to start a talkbass "Bass widows" support group... |

| | | | For the bass fanatic, gear can be a very personal thing...even to the point of cables, tuners, etc.
I would highly recommend getting a gift certificate to a store like Bass Northwest or Bass Central that has a wide range of mid and high end products. Trust me, that would be a GREAT gift for bassist who is into gear. They might not have formal gift certificates, but the staff at both these stores (Bass Northwest is in Seattle, and Bass Central is in Floriday) is very helpful and could work up some sort of account or something and send you some thing to indicate the gift.
That would be a way cool gift IMO! |

| | | One thing I found which is pretty cool as a cheap(er) gift...
While guitar transcription books are common, bass books are MEGA-RARE.
However in Japan transcription books are written for the whole band - guitar, bass, vocals and even drums are all in one book. Plus you can get them for albums you wouldn't even imagine finding over here.
Search on EBAY for Japan/Score. There are a couple of sellers ship worldwide (obviously THEY're in Japan) through ebay. if you REALLY want to get something obscure try http://www.crescent-shop.com/.
I don't know if your other half is into transcription books, but if they are then you'll get LOTS of cred if you can pick up the music for their favourite album, and you'll look really cool for getting it from Japan (the introduction is in japanese, but the music/lyrics are all english).
I'd also agree with the previous poster that if you're heading up towards the $500 price range, you probaly need to get some specific feedback from your partner to make sure you get exactly the right thing, but some little stuff will always be welcome.

You better hope he never does, or else you'll never see him again

"I really nice, dark, growly, buzzy, fretless something."
If you push your $500 up a bit you can get something super cool on ebay. There are lots of dark growly buzzy fretless things there. New, off the top of my head, you might consider this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=290181088161 . I don't think he'd complain if he found that stuffed in his stocking.
Also, chances are pretty good he's going come across this thread. I'd take his name out of it if you want it to be a surprise. Then again, I just posted part of his profile so, well... I guess I can delete that part if I say you took his name out. Good luck.
edit: just found this. I bought from this guy a while back and was really happy dealing with him. I like the black finish better too: http://cgi.ebay.com/CORT-CURBOW-BLAC...QQcmdZViewItem

| | Less barking, more wagging! | | Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: San Diego, CA | | | My wife began buying me bass-related art before we were married; when I look at one of "her" scultures, photos, paintings, or lithographs, I remember the expression on her face when she gave it to me, where we were living at the time, who I was playing with, and some of the fantastic concerts we attended before she passed away.
I love the fact that she was able to "share" my love of the bass and music in a way that was supportive, yet never intrusive. She loved hearing my gig stories, and the folks I played with over the years became our mutual friends - with whom she conspired to find and acquire new bass-related art.
As I become older, and I don't get around much anymore, I'm relatively certain that the memories I attach to my collection of treasured objects will invariably grow and change, but thanks to Judy, they will also provide tangible links to a life spent in the company of amazing people and the music that brought us together.
Bless you for being a bright and supportive a "bass widow." |

| | | | Thank you Jazzdogg. I keep hearing that I will eventually hate my partners obsession, but I think its great. I know when he is online its always looking at what I call 'Bassporn" and I thoroughly enjoy hearing about his gig and rehearsal stories and his mates in the band scene. And it is really reassuring that his interest becomes my interest and quite frankly never becomes boring. The only issue is that when we go to gigs, I asked bass players about their equipment. They invariably think that I play (which I don't) or try and use it as a 'pick up'.
Now the Christmas gift is just so that I can get him something that he will love and I just want to see him surprised and worship my excellent taste of course. |

If I was you I would start by checking his G.A.S. list on his profile: Berg NV215
Sadowsky 4 string. I'll jump on just about anything.
