What are your favorite periods in the bands you like ? I actually tend to like the later periods of bands with 20 plus year careers for example I really got into Later Metallica mid to late 1990's same with RHCP. For a band like STP its the SLDD album that I think they hit their musical peak as I think Smashing Pumpkins did with ISMC through Adore.

No Rush after Power Windows either (don't get me started).
Yes in the early 70's
King Crimson in the 72-74 era
Zappa from 69-76
Korn's 1st 2 albums only

For RHCP I honestly do like the newer stuff more, especially Stadium Arcadium. For Rush I love the epicness of older stuff (Like 2112) but the new CD was great too. As far as Dream Theater I think they're at their peak right now. |

I loved the early hard guitar sound of REO Speedwagon, the early R&B and blues rock of the J Geils Band, the "not so theatrical" harder rock of Styx. I loved Heart, and even kept with them through the bad hair and makeup 80s, but nothing later compared to their earlier work. |

newer Rammstein (Mutter, Reise reise, Rosenrot, Sehnsucht. I hate HATE Herzeleid. terrible album. though, it was there first)
older Metallica (Cliff burton Era)
new Buckethead (anything after colma/chickum pretty much. Peppers ghost = pure genious)
Old Primus (Porksoda, The brown album, tales form the punchbowl)
Thats about it. I listen to alot more, but these the most notable stuff in the group. everything else, eh i lile it either way |

King Crimson- toss up between 72-74 and 81-84 era
Carcass- necrotism/ Heartwork lineup
Death- Human and later
Dream Theater- current lineup (six degrees is my favorite album, and they put on one helluva show)
Opeth- Still Life through to Damnation
that's all I can think of at the moment |

| | | | Most bands I like run out of steam after 2-3 albums - you see it all the time
Killing Joke, though. Whoa. The last ten-twelve years have been stellar. The 2003 release in particular is just unbelievable (the 2006 album is still growing on me). One of the few bands I really enjoy that seems to get better, not worse, with time.

Rush - from the 2112 to Power Windows era...I like all their stuff. But I like that stuff best.

The new album is way up there on my list, too. Rush is like sex and pizza.. even when it's not great, it's still pretty good.

| | On the TB leaderboard for low talent/gear ratios! | | Join Date: Jun 2000 Location: NJ | | I'm thinking of a lot of bands already mentioned, though my preferences might be slightly different...
Rush - Real complicated. For a long time I disliked everything after Signals. Then Grace Under Pressure grew on me more. I also began to like their last few albums, each more than the one before, from Counterpart's up through Snakes and Arrows. Between Grace Under Pressure and Counterparts, I'm just learning to appreciate those albums now. I recently bought Power Windows and am liking it more each time I listen to it. But to get right down to it, Caress of Steel through Signals is my favorite period, with Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves probably being my favorite albums.
Dream Theater - Up to Scenes From a Memory
Genesis - Clearly the Peter Gabriel years where the best but I like everything up to Duke. After that it became the Phil Collins Show and the band took a major nosedive. It's hard to believe it only took about 10 years to go from songs like The Fountains Of Salmacis and Supper's Ready to songs like Mama and Illegal Alien.
Kansas - Everything up to Monolith. After that it was hit and miss, at least for me. They're still one of my favorite bands, though (as anyone who posts in the Song Uno thread could tell you )
Billy Joel - Everything up to The Nylon Curtain
Yes - Everything up to Tales of Topographic Oceans, though I actually do like Drama (fans of the classic Yes lineups might disagree, but it worked for me).
Heart - Everything up to the point where the record company decided to make thme into 80's big hair power ballad band. Some of their work in that time period was good, but Dreamboat Annie and Little Queen are OUTSTANDING albums. Those girls can rock with the best of them.
