I'll be staying in Lake Delton next week. I should be getting there sometime this Saturday afternoon. Anything good happening around the Dells or Baraboo?

not really the ideal time of year for that area.

I didn't take it to be negative. I can handle WI in November, I'm at about the same latitude anyway.

Someplace warm would have been my first choice, but I don't have the cash to fly, nor the inclination to spend what could be the bulk of my time off stranded at an airport.

One of my contacts out there flies small aircraft and said Baraboo has a nice airfield. He might take me flying for a day if the weather cooperates.

Did you know that Lake Delton disappeared this spring? Empty. It leaked out into the Wisconsin River during a hellacious rain event.

I suggest Devils Lake State Park, and the Circus Museum in Baraboo is pretty cool. Kidz'l dig it. If you pass Dr. Evermore's sculpture park you ought to stop in, very trippy. The International Crane Foundation is a one of a kind bird sanctuary/educational center. I love the whole area, it is unique.

Don't forget the Ho-Chunk Casino...

Actually, Baraboo does have a nice little airport, and while the colors are starting to fade, the whole Dells area (Lake Wisconsin, Baraboo Bluffs, the Dells, etc.) would make a scenic flight.

Enjoy your trip!

+1 about flying, especially at this time of year.

Don't forget that Madison is not too far away, and there is a lot of good live music within a couple blocks of the capitol.

Too bad you won't be around in a couple of weeks. It looks like Ed Friedland is doing a bass clinic at Ward-Brodt Music in Madison on 11/13. Unfortunately I'm over 2.5 hours away, or I'd try to make it.

I was in Madtown a couple of weeks ago and my wife wanted to stop at Ward-Brodt to look at some French Horn music for my son. It had been several years since I had been in there, but I remember they had a pretty decent selection of guitars, basses, amps, etc....overpriced, but still a good selection. I couldn't believe it when I walked in. That side of the business is pretty non-existent, and in fact, their entire bass inventory consisted of two no-name basses hanging on a wall. Anyway, I saw the flyer for Ed and was wishing I was going to be in town for that. It just struck me as kind of odd to have a bass clinic in a place that specializes in sheet music and band instuments. Anyway, here's the info in case you want to go.

I guess the sponsorship explains the venue....

PS - Hey Tom...recognize the Jazz in my avatar? It's still going strong....

I'll be back to life as usual by then.

They used to be a G&L dealer and I stopped in about a year ago. I too was shocked at the lack of basses (and guitars) and not a G&L in sight. What really ticked me off was the attitude of the Emo/Goth/Whatever puke that was working the counter.

Looks like a good band store, which makes sense with UW close by. For Bass it was a waste of time.

The clinic with Ed looks interesting....

Capital Brewery and New Glarus are two of my favorite local breweries. I don't like the "Spotted Cow" that every bar has -- not very hoppy at all. But a Capital Amber really hits the spot. You are on your own for the darker stuff, as I prefer light and bitter. But we take care of all tastes here, and I hope you enjoy your trip.

From what I understand, Ward-Brodt bailed out of the guitar-bass-drums business, but they still have a few instruments for school and rental business. They were going to convert the space to a high end piano showroom.

Madison has a good market for band and orchestra instruments and sheet music. Not only do we have the university, but also very strong local K-12 music programs, and amateur musicians all over the place.

There is only one indie retailer left in Madison selling guitar-bass-drums. The retailers who are still in business tend to specialize outside of the mainstream.

Since it's Fall, the Lakefront Pumpkin stuff is great. For one.

I like the New Glarus stuff- I like the Spotted Cow...

Any of the Sprecher stuff is good as well.

We take the kids to the water park resorts a couple of times a year. The kids like them all, but I prefer not to go to the one with the 3 waterparks spread throughout the complex. Too much running around in a wet suit.

You won't find it on tap, but Capital 'Autumnal Fire' will kick your ass and do it in a most delicious fashion. 5 stars out of 5.
