Look, I'm not a Green Day fan boy by any means, and nor do I generally like that genre of music, I just don't think that they get the credit they deserve. I'm not a fan of any of their "radio songs" such as Wake Me Up When September Ends, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, American Idiot or Holiday. That stuff is....bleh. I think their older stuff and the less popular songs from American Idiot are all very good music. Granted, Mike Dirnt is no Jaco, the guitar players aren't Hendrix, and the drummer isn't Buddy Rich. But what they lack in flashy riffs, they make up for in good writing in their songs and just overall tightness. i.e.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxPop7HDOIw
This is the video that made me a believer. I haven't seen another band that comes close to having that stage presence.
So I ask you TBers, shatter the stereotype that Green Day is only meant for tweens. They have GOOD music. |

Haven't cared much for them in the last decade and a half... though I do like the tune 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'.

Ridiculous |

But to each his own; if people want to like them or dislike them, that's fine. | I'm a fan of Green Day and I think I can answer that question. The music they have been writing recently (ie the ones the OP didn't much care for) are catchy, easy to listen to and fairly simple, with nice, safe chords that people are accustomed to hearing. It's the recipe to becoming popular. I can agree with punk purists who don't like what they have become, because it does seem they are leaning more towards pop than punk these days, but you can't blame them for writing/playing what sells. Especially in this day and age. Just my thoughts on the matter.

"What's with the hate for Fieldy?" "What's with the hate for Jaco?" "What's with the hate for relic-ing basses?" "What's with the hate for NOT relic-ing basses?"
I could go on for quite a long time.

The fact that Coldplay is famous is proof of that. However, this isn't meant as an insult to Green Day. Compared to Coldplay, Green Day is fantastic. |

I definately don't hate 'em. I just don't spend much time focusing on 'em. That said, I think Billy Joe is a really good song writer; a lot of his songs are catchy, fun and easily identifiable with. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
