Whats the longest you've ever been needing a string? This is specifically for 4 or 5 string players but you're all welcome.

I'm so poor I've gone so far 4 weeks without a G string.

Not long. I can't stand missing a string.

Keep your old ones next time you change them, that way you'l have a backup, even if it is worn.

I usually have a set or two of old strings in each bass case- just in case.

I used to change strings every couple months- because I could. Now, I've got a few sets of new strings that I'm just waiting until I absolutely need to change them.

I always have spare sets but the more basses I get the more expensive that "insurance" is.

On bass? Hasn't happened yet (to quote John Hiatt)

With those financial recources your sig should read "I am to ramen as Wolf is to Dog"

I've only ONCE ever broken a string, so it's a non-issue.

However when I do change my strings I always keep a complete USED set in my gigbag.

I figure if I ever did break a string at a gig, then putting on one fresh zingy string would sound weird compared to the other worn in strings (12 month old ground-wounds - 60+ gigs, with about as many rehersals). If I broke string live i'd put on a "pre-worn" one so the sound is at least a little coinsistant.

To make things worse, I found a D string and mistook it for a G string, cut it and put it on my bass and now the D string is completely useless because it isn't long enough to go on the D string (don't what word to use) slot? cause it won't reach.

I once finished a set minus an A string. That was something like three tunes, so....12 minutes? Must have been about 1994 or 95 I'd guess.

A G string only costs $3. You must be really poor.

Be glad you don't play upright, the last set of 4 I bought was $200. The cheapest I've seen (and they are awful) are still about $60.

I went six months without a G on my sixer once. I just played another bass until I got the money to buy a set for a sixer.
