what does mediocrity sound like?
i sometimes tell people that i'm an excellent mediocre player - especially when i'm around berklee folk ...but i'm curious as to how others (a.k.a. y'all) would define a mediocre bass player.
no name calling, please.

I played well enough, to impress people; but at the time, I didn't fully understand the role of the instrument. It's one thing to say "Chordal foundation, rhythm, etc", but it's an entirely different thing to really internalize them. |

| | | | If you call yourself mediocre, you're good and are just being modest.
Or you're bad and being immodest.

Other people say different, but my lack of knowledge would indicate that I can not be stellar. Personally, I think a group of mediocre players all doing what they are supposed to do is a lot better than a group of prodigies all wanking away and trying to show you how good they are.

| | | | A mediocre bass player is one that thinks mediocre describes his skills well. Modesty is good but if you think you suck at bass and never will be good, then you indeed will never be. |

To me, (and I define myself as mediocre), mediocre means you can sound like the best bass player in the world at certain times while playing certain things, but you are in some way limited and cannot really play everything you would like to. Or then your theory knowledge/musical ear/technique/reading abilities/something else isn't the best. If you know a few professional musicians and don't think you're quite on the same level but anyway good enough among good amateurs and not a beginner still struggling with the basics, you're a mediocre player.

I would define mediocre as a player who is past beginner but not quite good yet. What kind of piece in your opinions is one that separates mediocre from good players?

When one of my fellow bass players (younger than me), ask me how good they are, these are the things I look at the most.

Why can't mediocre be a phase? Something we in the mediocre community are working on?

As a result, I feel destined to remain in the seething morass of mediocrity, and never experience the rarefied air of the accomplished musician. I am cover band material and nothing more. However, I'm OK with that, since I love to play the bass, and the rest of my band thinks I'm at least good enough to perform with them.
