What's So Scary About Auditioning?

Sign in to disble this ad
Did an audition tonight with a rock band. I am almost 60 years old and the oldest was 45, maybe. It was a busy day at the store and my wife was coming into town more than a little irritated by her third week on the road so I didn't have much time to mentally prepare.

I had learned the dozen songs, nothing to hard like Wildflower, 7 nation army, Jet Airliner. All good dance tunes and guitar based.

Driving to make a 7:PM time in LA is difficult and I was a few minutes late. On the drive over I kept telling myself that it was a waste of my time. I was too old for the gig and a hundred other reasons why I should just call them and tell them thanks but no thanks.

I think it went well, and from the feedback of the band, I think they were okay with me. Didn't screw up to badly except missed the bridge on one tune. I sang strong harmonies on a couple of easy songs. Shaking hands as I left I felt like even if I didn't get a call back it was worth while to stand up to my fears and insecurities.

What is so scary about auditioning? 40 years in the biz and I still feel like some punk/rock band is going to reject me. What would it matter anyway? They aren't going on tour next week and neither am I.

audition

I play my best when I'm relaxed. Whenever I have an audition, I always tighten up. I end up playing half as good as I can because I keep everything easy so I don't screw up.
Once I get in a band and we start playing together, my bandmates always are amazed at how much better I am than they expected. But I'm not a pro player so thats how it always works.
