Whats up with Porcupine Tree?

No activity on their website, no tour dates, only news on Wilson's solo stuff. Now on his 3rd solo album. Unsure if things look good or not. I sure hope to see them again! Anyone know something I don't?

Well, according to the almighty Wikipedia:

Quote:

After the release and touring in support of their tenth studio album, The Incident, the band became inactive as Wilson began to focus on his solo career. While they have not broken up, they also have no particular plans beyond "someday", with members all working on separate projects, and Wilson committing himself to his solo work through most of 2013.

They're on Hiatus.

Steven Wilson teamed up with Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) to form Storm Corrosion, they released a self-titled album last year.
It's OK, not great.

DiabolusInMusic 03-18-2013 10:07 AM

Yup, "hiatus". They haven't been together for a while.

It basically means unless Steve gets broke or shunned for his solo releases do not expect to see them again.

His new solo stuff is great. Nick Beggs from Kajagoogoo - yes, THAT Nick Beggs - does some killer bass work.

I heard a track from the Prog Magazine sampler and I have to agree. But Kajagoogoo? Really? I mean... Kajagoogoo?

Yeah, the Wiki page on them includes some interview quotes to the effect that yeah, they plan to get together again, but they don't really know when, and they don't really know what kind of approach they'll take because the other guys aren't into the jazz influences that Wilson is, blah blah blah. Don't hold your breath for the next album, basically.

I believe Adam Holzman, who worked with Miles Davis years ago, tours with him.

I saw Nick Beggs play with John Paul Jones back when Jonesy was touring in support of his album, Zooma. Beggs was actually pretty damned good, and played most of the set on Chapman Stick, but also played some acoustic guitar.

BTW, that show was Jonesy & his band opening for King Crimson! And I daresay that Crimson had their work cut out for them following Jonesy with Nick Beggs on Stick and Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello & The Attractions) on drums.

I concur, I did not particularly enjoy it, and considering who is involved, it is a bit of an unexpected departure. New PT would be nice but I'm not holding my breath.

+2 Absolutely.

Go find whatever you can on youtube...even the studio sessions. Beggs is awesome.

It is a shame because PT is in my opinion the best band I have discovered in the last 10 years bar none. I am SOOOO glad now I saw them on The Incident Tour. I like Wilson's solo stuff, but it doesn't touch PT. Not to me any way.

mmbongo 03-19-2013 07:11 AM

I think 'The Raven' is the best Wilson solo project he's done by far. I've not gotten into any of his other solo stuff, nor Storm Corrosion. Blackfield was pretty good though. Porcupine Tree is just on a totally different level, though. In Absentia was a game changer for me. I'd like to see them get back together, but only if the material would be as good as past PT stuff.

baddarryl 03-19-2013 06:44 PM

I am getting into Grace for Drowning, but it has taken a few listens. PT was like zap! Incredible all at once!

Lackey 03-24-2013 05:23 AM

Love SW and PT, haven't been able to quite get into the bass on the last two solo albums though. For that matter, as much as I dig Marco Minnemann, he doesn't IMO have the dynamic range to do full justice to SW's material.

Call me biased, but Gavin Harrison can do the mellow parts better.. PT reunion please.

Maybe I'm the only one that thinks this, but..

I dunno. I prefer PT for both bass and drums personally.

Kraken 03-24-2013 05:48 AM

looks like PT may be inactive for a little while but I know Nick Beggs has just been involved in another band 'Lifesigns' which has had involvement of Robin Boult who was the Guitarist for one of Dave Stewarts side projects 'Tilt'

I can recommend both the Tilt and Lifesigns album if you are that way inclined.
