What's your favorite jazz band?

Sign in to disble this ad
Mine is definitely Pat Metheny Group. They blow me away every time I listen to them. I like how it is not only improvisations over AABA or similar, but they are true compositions that AFAIK are pretty unique in this world.

What's yours? May it be funk/jazz, soul/jazz, fusion or something else, but it has to have a strong jazz element it it.

The reason I made this thread is partially to discover new interesting bands, so it would be nice if you could post a link to a song by the band in question as well.

Thanks,

DB

If you dig the PMG you might like the band I saw last night, Oregon. Steve Rodby, the longtime bassist in Pat's group, produced their latest album.

Another favorite of mine is Steve Coleman and Five Elements. Steve used to play in Dave Holland's band, and those albums are well worth checking out too IMHO.

I haven't heard Oregon in years. I saw them a lot in the days when Colin Walcott was alive. How do they sound these days. Glen Moore was always a favorite upright player. Ralph Towner and Paul McCandless are great also.

+1 to those who've mentioned Dave Holland's ensembles. I'm also partial to Ornette Coleman (all periods including recent).

Too hard to decide. I like lots of jazz fusion music, so there is lots there. I guess for closer to more traditional jazz combos, I'd chose Miles Davis Quintet with Carter, Shorter, Williams and Hancock.

Nice input here folks. Keep it coming..

Passinwind - Those two bands were great! Any specific albums you can recommend?
Bassist4life - That band was simply great as well! I think I'll check out if it would be possible to see if I could get that band to head over here as well some time (I'm a board member in a jazzclub here). It depends on how much they charge though. We usually have a band or two per year from over there...

Among the more traditional jazz bands, there's countless of bands I like. The ones mentioned above are all favorites.

I'd like to introduce a scandinavian jazz band to you: Jazz Kamikaze http://jazzkamikaze.mubito.customers...t/jazzkamikaze

We had them playing in our club last year and I really liked their music. They have a really energetic tenor sax player that blew me away. The other instrumentalists were really great too. The music reminded a bit of Yellowjackets on Red Bull. Great songs too! If you click on the link above, click on media, select "audio" on the left and click on a song. A window will pop up with a song list.

Then Steely Dan is of course a favorite. It's not as much jazz as the other suggested ones but great too. I think Chris Potter plays with them as well? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Do you mean just "weather report" or is there another band called THE Weather Report?

Whaa?! Jazz?
Even though the horn players are HUGE jazz players, they're definitely funk.
