When did musicians become respectable?

I know for a very long time that musicians were socially just above beggars but now it is possible for them to be even rather high-brow members of society.

I was just wondering when this happened to musicians and composers.

Thanks,
Sam

Hi.

This is news to me. We were above beggars???

I always thought we were among the hookers, strutting our stuff for money, leaving people with guilty empty feeling and an empty wallet.

Not to mention the noise we were making when begging. The pan handlers are pretty silent most of the time?

Not that I'm anything that could be considered a musician ATM, but once I was.
Oh those were the days...

Regards
Sam

I have a close friend who is making quite a decent living both playing in his band, and running his own studio, and is very active in the community doing all kinds of good stuff for his local government and education system...

And his dad still calls him a "string pluckin' gypsy", haha.

So it's all in the eyes of the beholder.

I was thinking more along the lines of classical musicians. Maybe I should ask this on the double bass side.

Probably. I, for one, am highly disreputable, and hope it stays that way.
