So the other day a girl came over and asked me to play her a song and I realized that I had no bassline that could stand on its own without a drummer, guitarist etc. Can you suggest any songs that would fit in the mood??

Maybe try "What's going on" ?

"hey Pretty mama, You wanna hear my funky Jam?"
"C'mon baby gonna slap that bass, all night long for you"
Then make up some improv about what she is wearing and how good she looks...
while continuing to slap...
Go back into the chorus, and then when your done put down you bass.
and smoothly say..
"your damn right"
Like from the shaft theme
I guarantee she will be impressed... lol..

(but first get a DB because Bach sounds better when you play it arco)
ps: and seriously, you should work on your basslines if you can't do without a drummer or guitar player... |

I'd go "classic" direction, as those tunes are most recognizable. Snowman melody adaptation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTvpsbZJo-0 Greensleeves melody adaptation, one version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Viww51wQbTA RIP Billy.
The beauty of those two pieces is that now matter how You play them, people always remember them even though they don't necessarily know the titles/composers/performers.
Thin Lizzy/Phil Lynott had quite a few "bass heavy" riffs that go well wit bass as well as with a guitar.
One that I've used is the intro of "Seek And Destroy" by Metallica, but then again I'm from that age group . Edit: This classic riff by Blackmore works with bass as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-2Ma-m5B8o
Regards
Sam

just about any smooth, walking jazz part on an upright earns a smile.
if you want to make them laugh, the pink panther theme and the meow mix jingle never fail.

Bonus points if you can sing it while playing. I predict you'll find some tongue down your throat before you get to the verse about "Captain Smith and Pocohontas" |

| | | | Some things I have used in the past for a quick solo bass and vocals:
Folsom Prison
If you want me to stay
The Trooper
Paranoid
(They all can kind of work if you can work them)
And for just some bass solo stuff.
Minuet In G
Moonlight Sonata
The Awakening

Perhaps she'll know Smoke on the Water.

Then you can play whatever you want and she'll love it. Just make sure it's something you can remember cause she'll want to hear it again. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
