When a girl asks you to play something..

Sign in to disble this ad
So the other day a girl came over and asked me to play her a song and I realized that I had no bassline that could stand on its own without a drummer, guitarist etc. Can you suggest any songs that would fit in the mood??

Usually are girls who want to listen to some mainstream music, you must use chords to fill a certain hole of the bass! Extreme - More than words?

Motown is an excellent suggestion. Has melody and can stand on it's own.

Maybe try "What's going on" ?

Just Play some slap bass and in your deepest voice Sing...

"hey Pretty mama, You wanna hear my funky Jam?"

"C'mon baby gonna slap that bass, all night long for you"

Then make up some improv about what she is wearing and how good she looks...
while continuing to slap...
Go back into the chorus, and then when your done put down you bass.
and smoothly say..

"your damn right"
Like from the shaft theme

I guarantee she will be impressed... lol..

Being a chick I can can tell you that chicks dig Bach
(but first get a DB because Bach sounds better when you play it arco)

ps: and seriously, you should work on your basslines if you can't do without a drummer or guitar player...

Hi.

I'd go "classic" direction, as those tunes are most recognizable.

Snowman melody adaptation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTvpsbZJo-0

Greensleeves melody adaptation, one version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Viww51wQbTA RIP Billy.

The beauty of those two pieces is that now matter how You play them, people always remember them even though they don't necessarily know the titles/composers/performers.

Thin Lizzy/Phil Lynott had quite a few "bass heavy" riffs that go well wit bass as well as with a guitar.

One that I've used is the intro of "Seek And Destroy" by Metallica, but then again I'm from that age group .

Edit: This classic riff by Blackmore works with bass as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-2Ma-m5B8o

Regards
Sam

something slick and funky on the 1 usually impresses. i drop a little "portrait of tracy" occasionally too.

just about any smooth, walking jazz part on an upright earns a smile.

if you want to make them laugh, the pink panther theme and the meow mix jingle never fail.

"Fever" by Peggy Lee. Real simple bassline, but ultra-slinky/sexy.

Bonus points if you can sing it while playing. I predict you'll find some tongue down your throat before you get to the verse about "Captain Smith and Pocohontas"

Some things I have used in the past for a quick solo bass and vocals:

Folsom Prison
If you want me to stay
The Trooper
Paranoid

(They all can kind of work if you can work them)

And for just some bass solo stuff.

Minuet In G
Moonlight Sonata
The Awakening

Check out Seeman by Rammstein; it's got a fantastic bassline that simply repeats itself through the song, and it's VERY sweet sounding. I get compliments all the time from it.

... that depends on the age. If she's in her 20's ... you'll most likely get the same look that a dog has, when it hears a high pitched noise.

Perhaps she'll know Smoke on the Water.

Just say "Funny you should ask. I was thinking of you the other day and wrote this." Then you can play whatever you want and she'll love it. Just make sure it's something you can remember cause she'll want to hear it again.
